globalsouthopportunities.com

Application Deadline

October 19, 2026

Description

The Canon Collins Trust is inviting applications for the Leigh Day LLB Scholarship at the University of Fort Hare and the University of the Western Cape (UWC) in South Africa. The scholarship supports law students from selected Southern African countries who demonstrate strong academic performance and extracurricular involvement. Supported by Leigh Day & Co, a London-based law firm specialising in personal injury and human rights law, the scholarship aims to support future members of South Africa’s legal profession and contribute to the development of fair and equitable legal systems. Eligible students can receive funding for up to two years, helping cover tuition and other study-related expenses. Leigh Day LLB Scholarship Overview The Leigh Day LLB Scholarship is specifically available to students currently studying for an LLB degree at the University of Fort Hare or the University of the Western Cape. Canon Collins Trust invites applications from current second- and third-year students who will progress into their third and fourth years in 2027. Successful applicants will receive financial support for a maximum of two years, provided they continue to meet the relevant scholarship requirements. The scholarship is part of Canon Collins Trust’s broader commitment to supporting education, law, human rights and social justice in Southern Africa. Scholarship Benefits For 2026 awards, successful scholars will receive R40,000 per academic year. Funding can be provided for up to a maximum of two years. The scholarship payment will be made directly into the student’s university account. The funds will initially contribute towards tuition fees, while any remaining amount may be used for accommodation, books or other expenses relevant to the student’s studies. The programme supports both full-time and part-time study and may also consider applicants undertaking their studies through distance learning. In addition to financial support, scholarship recipients become part of the Canon Collins network. Current scholars are expected to participate in the organisation’s annual conference and smaller events held throughout the year. Who Can Apply? Applicants must meet all of the stated eligibility requirements. Candidates must be nationals of one of the following countries: Angola Botswana Lesotho Malawi Mozambique Namibia South Africa Eswatini (Swaziland) Zambia Zimbabwe Applicants must also have a strong academic record and demonstrate extracurricular involvement. They must currently be second- or third-year undergraduate law students at either the University of Fort Hare or the University of the Western Cape and must be able to complete their LLB coursework no later than December 2027. Students who do not meet all the eligibility conditions are advised not to apply. Application Materials and AI Restriction Canon Collins Trust has introduced a strict requirement concerning the use of artificial intelligence in applications. All application materials must be entirely the applicant’s original work. The scholarship provider states that applicants must not use artificial intelligence tools, including ChatGPT, Bard or similar software, to generate, edit or assist with any part of their application. According to the scholarship provider, applications containing content created or modified with the assistance of AI will be immediately disqualified and rejected.
