Makerere University, in partnership with Case Western Reserve University in the United States, has opened applications for the 2026 Biomedical Engineering (BME) Master’s Scholarship Programme aimed at strengthening Uganda’s capacity in medical technology innovation and biomedical research. The scholarship programme is funded through a grant from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) Fogarty International Center and is administered by the Biomedical Engineering Unit within the Department of Physiology at Makerere University. The initiative seeks to equip Ugandan researchers and innovators with advanced skills in biomedical engineering while promoting the development of technologies that address critical health challenges affecting the country and the wider region. Scholarship Programme Overview The scholarship programme is designed for Ugandan students already enrolled in eligible Master of Science programmes at Makerere University. Successful applicants will receive financial support to pursue research in Biomedical Engineering or closely related engineering disciplines. Funding provided under the programme includes: Full tuition support A monthly living stipend Research funding Financial support for one academic year of Master’s study The programme aims to strengthen local expertise in medical technology innovation by supporting students interested in developing practical healthcare solutions through engineering and interdisciplinary research. Eligible Master’s Programmes Applications are encouraged from students enrolled in the following Master’s programmes at Makerere University: MSc in Technology Innovation and Industrial Development under the College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT) MSc in Computer Science (College of Computing and Information Sciences) MSc in Immunology and Clinical Microbiology Master of Health Informatics Master of Bioinformatics Students pursuing closely related engineering or health-related postgraduate programmes may also be considered if they meet the eligibility requirements. Research Areas of Interest Applicants are expected to propose research projects focusing on healthcare technologies addressing priority disease areas. Preferred research themes include: Cardiovascular diseases Blood disorders Chronic movement disorders The programme places significant emphasis on innovation in medical devices and technology solutions capable of improving healthcare delivery and patient outcomes. Eligibility Requirements To qualify for the scholarship, applicants should satisfy the following criteria: Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a health-related discipline from a recognised university. Demonstrate a strong interest in medical devices and technology innovation. Be enrolled in an eligible Master’s programme at Makerere University. Show evidence of good academic performance during the first year of the MSc programme. Be willing to participate in an oral interview as part of the selection process. Submit a research concept aligned with the programme’s thematic priority areas. The programme also welcomes MSc students who wish to refine or develop their research ideas in collaboration with the Biomedical Engineering team. Required Application Documents Applicants must submit all required documents as a single PDF file.
