globalsouthopportunities.com

Application Deadline

June 18, 2026

Description

The Mandela Rhodes Foundation has officially announced the 2026 edition of the prestigious Äänit Prize, a social impact funding initiative designed to support innovative African entrepreneurs and changemakers creating solutions for some of the continent’s most pressing challenges. The competition, which is open exclusively to Mandela Rhodes Scholarship alumni and Rhodes Scholarship alumni from 2005 onwards, will provide up to USD 100,000 in funding annually to between one and four winners. Applications for the 2026 Äänit Prize will open on 20 May 2026 and close on 17 June 2026. Supporting Social Impact Across Africa The Äänit Prize was established to identify and support ventures capable of delivering meaningful and sustainable social impact across Africa, particularly for marginalized and underserved communities. According to the foundation, the prize seeks projects, businesses, and initiatives that are: Socially impactful Sustainable and scalable Feasible and innovative Led by individuals with strong leadership potential and execution capability This year’s edition expands the scope of the prize to also recognize alumni driving transformative work within existing organizations, including non-profit, for-profit, and hybrid enterprises. The initiative reflects the foundation’s belief that impactful African innovation can emerge at every level of society and across multiple sectors. Funding and Leadership Development Successful applicants will receive financial support to help scale their initiatives and increase their social impact. While the total funding allocation can reach USD 100,000, the independent judging panel determines how the prize money is distributed among winners. The foundation noted that award recipients are expected to remain actively involved in their projects for at least two years following the award. Focus Areas for the Äänit Prize The competition supports initiatives aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and prioritizes ten key impact areas relevant to the African context: Access to affordable housing Agriculture and food security Climate change Conflict and terrorism Education Energy access Financial services Healthcare, water, and sanitation Infrastructure Technology and data These categories reflect the foundation’s commitment to addressing inequality, improving livelihoods, and supporting sustainable development throughout Africa. Notable 2025 Winners The 2025 Äänit Prize recognized several innovative African entrepreneurs making significant contributions within their communities. Among the winners was Sunday Ochai, founder of EduRise, an initiative supporting conflict-affected children in Nigeria through accelerated education, menstrual health support, and peacebuilding programmes. Fama Jallow was also recognized for Hisia, a climate intelligence venture using artificial intelligence, satellite data, and environmental sensors to support smallholder farmers with real-time climate information and disaster preparedness tools. Another winner, Kenechukwu Ikebuaku, was honored for Mozisha, an apprenticeship and mentorship initiative aimed at equipping African youth with employability skills and workforce experience. Previous winners have included ventures in healthcare, renewable energy, artificial intelligence, education, agriculture, and climate resilience. Application Process The 2026 Äänit Prize application process will take place in multiple stages. Step 1: Indication of Interest Applicants must first submit a short motivation outlining their project, business idea, or social initiative and explaining its intended impact. Step 2: Invitation to Apply Following the initial review, shortlisted candidates will be invited to submit full applications. Step 3: Full Application Submission Selected applicants will submit detailed project proposals, including a business or project plan of no more than 12 pages and supporting documentation. Step 4: Interviews and Pitching Longlisted candidates will participate in interviews during the week of 17 August 2026 and deliver short pitches based on their proposals. Step 5: Proposal Improvement Final-round candidates will receive reviewer feedback and have an opportunity to improve their proposals and submit a two-minute recorded pitch. Step 6: Final Selection An independent panel of judges will evaluate the shortlisted applications and determine the final winners and funding allocations. The winners are expected to be publicly announced during a celebration event on 18 September 2026.
