Two fellowships will be awarded for the 2027 commencement. Established through a $5 million philanthropic gift from Suzanne Walker and the late Emeritus Professor Ken McKinnon AO, the fellowship supports researchers whose work can generate meaningful benefits for Pacific Islander, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples, including through improvements in health, education, law or public policy. Applications close on 31 October 2026. The fellowship also provides: AUD $20,000 in project funding. A tuition fee waiver for up to four years. Professional development opportunities. Leadership workshops. Mentoring. Fellowship events and networking opportunities. Together, these components give the fellowship a stated total value of more than AUD $200,000. Who Is Eligible? The fellowship is open to domestic and international students, including prospective PhD candidates commencing at UOW in 2027. Current UOW PhD candidates who are in their first year of study can also apply without submitting a new admission application. Applicants will be assessed on more than academic performance. The selection process considers: Academic excellence and research achievement. Quality and feasibility of the proposed research. Potential impact of the research. Relevance of the research to Pacific Islander, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples. Leadership and initiative. Capacity to contribute to positive change. Service and community engagement. Mentoring, advocacy or other contributions beyond academic achievement. Applicants from Pacific Islander, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander communities are strongly encouraged to apply. Research Areas and Eligible Faculties The fellowship can support research across several UOW faculties, including: Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences. Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health. Faculty of Arts, Society and Business. The proposed research should demonstrate a clear potential to benefit Pacific Islander, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples. Potential areas of impact include health, education, law and public policy, although the fellowship is not limited to these disciplines. Leadership and Community Service A distinctive feature of the McKinnon-Walker Fellowship is its emphasis on leadership, service and community contribution. Applicants are expected to demonstrate how they have contributed beyond conventional academic achievement. Examples can include community engagement, mentoring, advocacy, leadership initiatives, volunteering or other activities demonstrating a commitment to serving communities. The fellowship therefore seeks candidates who combine strong academic and research potential with a demonstrated commitment to creating wider social impact. How to Apply UOW requires PhD applicants to have a confirmed supervisor before submitting their application. New PhD Applicants Applicants commencing a PhD in 2027 should complete two stages. Step 1: Apply for PhD admission Applicants should identify a potential supervisor and obtain their support before submitting a full PhD application through the UOW HDR application portal. The application must include a 3–4 page research proposal and should be submitted by 31 October 2026. Applicants should indicate in their PhD application that they wish to be considered for the McKinnon-Walker Research Fellowship. Step 2: Submit the Fellowship Application Applicants must prepare a single PDF containing: CV of up to four pages, including research experience and outputs. One-page statement describing leadership, service and community contributions. One-page statement explaining which Pacific Islander, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander communities the research will benefit, how it will benefit them and how those communities will be involved in the research. Email from the proposed supervisor supporting the fellowship application. The completed PDF must be emailed to the UOW Graduate Research School by 31 October 2026. Current UOW PhD Students Current UOW PhD candidates in their first year of study do not need to reapply for PhD admission. They only need to complete the fellowship application and submit the required documents as one PDF to the Graduate Research School by the deadline. How to Strengthen an Application Applicants should develop a research proposal that clearly demonstrates academic excellence, feasibility and measurable community impact. The strongest applications are likely to establish a clear connection between the proposed research and the needs or priorities of relevant Pacific Islander, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander communities. Candidates should also provide concrete evidence of leadership and service rather than simply describing themselves as community-minded. Examples of previous initiatives, advocacy, mentoring, community projects or leadership responsibilities can strengthen the application. It is also important to engage a suitable UOW supervisor early and ensure that the supervisor understands and supports both the research proposal and fellowship application. Why Apply for the McKinnon-Walker Fellowship? The fellowship provides substantial financial support for doctoral study while placing strong emphasis on research impact, leadership and community service. For an outstanding researcher whose proposed PhD can contribute to improved outcomes for Pacific Islander, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples, the fellowship offers an opportunity to combine advanced academic training with meaningful social impact.
