Merck Foundation Africa Research Summit MARS Empowering Women and Youth in African Research Merck Foundation invites applications for the Merck Foundation Africa Research Summit MARS 2026, a flagship initiative dedicated to advancing scientific research capacity across the continent. The 2026 edition maintains its central theme of the role of scientific research in women’s health and reproductive care, reflecting the Foundation’s long standing commitment to addressing crucial health challenges through African led innovation. Organized with scientific support from the African Union Scientific Technical and Research Commission, the African Reproductive Care Society and the Manipal Academy of Higher Education, the summit calls on emerging African scientists to contribute research that can drive meaningful policy action and healthcare development. Purpose and Vision of MARS 2026 The MARS platform aims to strengthen scientific expertise within Africa by empowering young researchers and women researchers who are shaping the future of STEM. Through the MARS Awards, the summit highlights exceptional research and encourages scientists to expand their capabilities, deepen their impact and contribute to a stronger African research ecosystem. T wo distinguished categories recognize outstanding achievements: Best Young African Researcher and Best African Woman Researcher. These awards spotlight the essential role that early career scientists and women leaders play in transforming research landscapes across the continent. A Platform for Dialogue and Development: Merck Foundation Africa Research Summit MARS MARS 2026 is more than a research competition; it is a continental forum for knowledge exchange, policy dialogue and professional growth. Award recipients gain the opportunity to present their research findings before an audience of global and regional experts, creating an environment that fosters collaboration and new scientific partnerships. The summit also opens the door for vital discussions with ministries responsible for health, education, information, science and technology and gender. These conversations aim to shape policies that accelerate women’s and youth participation in STEM fields and enhance the integration of research into national healthcare strategies. A key focus of the summit is addressing the persistent know do gap, the barrier that prevents scientific discoveries from translating into real world impact. By encouraging practical, applicable and context driven research, MARS 2026 promotes solutions that strengthen healthcare systems and advance sustainable development goals throughout African communities. Abstract Submission Requirements MARS 2026 invites abstracts from researchers committed to improving women’s health and reproductive care. Applications are open to Final year PhD students Young investigators engaged in active research Medical doctors enrolled in postgraduate medical fellowship programs Applicants must be primarily affiliated with African universities or research institutions, although collaborative projects involving partners within or outside Africa are welcome and encouraged. Eligible research topics include: Women’s health Infertility and reproductive care All submissions must demonstrate scientific rigor, originality and relevance to Africa’s public health priorities. Award Categories and Research Opportunities Applicants may enter their work under either of the two award categories• Best African Woman Researcher• Best Young African Researcher Winners will benefit from significant professional development opportunities, including: A three month research training scholarship in India designed to strengthen technical expertise and expand global research exposure Official invitation to participate in the Merck Foundation Africa Asia Luminary 2026, a high level convening of scientists, policymakers and global health leaders These opportunities are intended to support long term career growth, foster international collaboration and encourage continued contributions to critical research fields. Application Process and Deadline Interested candidates may submit their abstracts and applications via email to mars@merck foundation.com or through the online application portal available on the Merck Foundation website. Applicants are encouraged to prepare thorough, well structured submissions that clearly highlight their research objectives, methodologies and findings.
