Monash University has opened applications for the PhD Scholarships: Shaping AI’s Future programme, offering up to five fully funded doctoral scholarships for outstanding researchers interested in exploring the societal, cultural, ethical, and political dimensions of artificial intelligence (AI). Hosted by Monash Arts in Melbourne, Australia, the 3.5-year PhD programme supports innovative research that examines how AI is transforming communities, institutions, creativity, democracy, communication, and everyday life. Successful candidates will receive a tax-free living stipend of AUD 41,100 per year alongside additional scholarship allowances. About the Scholarship Artificial intelligence, particularly generative AI, is reshaping education, governance, national security, creative industries, healthcare, and social relationships at an unprecedented pace. While technological innovation continues to accelerate, Monash University emphasizes the critical role of the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS) in ensuring AI develops in ways that are ethical, inclusive, and socially beneficial. The scholarship programme seeks researchers who can contribute fresh perspectives on the human dimensions of AI, producing evidence that informs future public policy, institutional practice, and societal decision-making. Available Research Themes Applicants are encouraged to align their proposals with one of several interdisciplinary research projects led by internationally recognised Monash scholars. Suggested topics include: AI companionship and youth safety and wellbeing Public resistance and rejection of AI in everyday life AI for inclusive communication in culturally and linguistically diverse ageing communities AI, democratic participation, persuasion and public trust The future of music and evolving creative labour markets Human creativity, AI and screen aesthetics Automation and labour in warehouse and logistics industries Auditing AI algorithms and reducing discrimination in automated decision-making Digital inequalities in the age of artificial intelligence Applicants may also develop closely related research proposals within the broader scope of AI and societal transformation. Scholarship Benefits Successful candidates will receive comprehensive financial support throughout their doctoral studies. The scholarship includes: AUD 41,100 annual tax-free Research Living Allowance (2027 rate) 3.5-year full-time funded PhD appointment Annual indexed stipend increases Additional allowances under RTP scholarship conditions International mobility and research travel opportunities Professional development and industry engagement opportunities Access to Monash University’s globally connected research networks The programme is based at the Clayton or Caulfield Campus in Melbourne, Victoria. Eligibility Criteria Monash Arts welcomes applicants from diverse academic and professional backgrounds within the humanities, social sciences, and creative arts. Applicants should: Hold an Honours or Master’s degree (or international equivalent) in a relevant discipline Demonstrate a substantial research component in previous studies Have achieved First-Class Honours (H1) or equivalent Meet Monash University’s English language proficiency requirements where applicable Be eligible to enrol as a full-time, on-campus PhD candidate Not already hold a PhD qualification The successful applicant is expected to commence the programme no later than 12 March 2027.
