Program Overview The Pendleton Scholarship supports students enrolling in either a Master of Science (MS) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program at Texas Tech University. The fellowship is structured to develop future leaders in rangeland science through rigorous academic training and research engagement. Key features of the scholarship include: Full funding for graduate study in rangeland science and management Coverage of tuition and fringe benefits Annual living stipend ranging from $20,000 to $30,000, based on qualifications Immersive research and academic experience requiring at least 40 hours per week Anticipated program start date after August 14, 2026 Study location in Lubbock, Texas, with access to diverse rangeland ecosystems Some university fees may remain the responsibility of the student. Areas of Study and Research Focus Applicants may pursue research in any aspect of rangeland science and management. Research topics may include, but are not limited to: Rangeland habitat assessment and management Livestock grazing systems and sustainability Wildlife populations and habitat management Prescribed fire and wildfire ecology Rangeland restoration and ecosystem resilience Interactions between land use, climate, and rangeland health Prospective students are encouraged to develop research interests that align with contemporary natural resource challenges and applied management solutions. Faculty Collaboration and Mentorship A core expectation of the Pendleton Scholarship is close collaboration with faculty members in the Texas Tech University Department of Natural Resources Management. Applicants should: Identify a faculty advisor whose research aligns with their academic interests Demonstrate clear research goals connected to faculty expertise Show readiness for mentorship-driven, research-intensive graduate study Alignment between student interests and faculty research priorities is a key selection criterion. Applicant Qualifications Ideal candidates for the Pendleton Scholarship will meet the following qualifications: A BS or MS degree in: Range Science Ecology Wildlife Science Botany Or a closely related field Strong academic performance and scholarly potential Competitive grades; GRE scores are optional but may strengthen applications Excellent written and verbal communication skills Demonstrated enthusiasm for: Rangeland conservation Sustainable land management Natural resource stewardship No prior professional experience is required, making this fellowship well suited for highly motivated early-career scientists.
