This fellowship aims to make significant works from Africa and the African Diaspora accessible to a global readership through translation. The program encourages the translation of poetry, prose, critical theory, and other scholarly or literary texts into English, Arabic, or other languages. This fellowship is non-residential, allowing recipients to conduct their translation work from anywhere in the world. It is designed to support translators and scholars from across the Global South in bringing underrepresented African voices and ideas to wider audiences. Funding ranges from $1,000 to $5,000, depending on the scale and quality of the proposed project. Recipients may propose translations of classic texts, previously untranslated works, or newly conceived works feasible for completion within the fellowship period. Projects may also include ongoing translations that can be finalized during the fellowship. Fellowship Objectives The fellowship is structured to achieve the following goals: Expand access to African and African Diaspora literature and scholarship by translating works into widely accessible languages. Support scholarly engagement with African texts and facilitate cross-cultural knowledge sharing. Promote diverse literary and critical traditions by supporting the translation of works from lesser-known or underrepresented languages. Strengthen the global profile of African and diaspora intellectual and creative work, fostering new networks between translators, scholars, and readers worldwide. Eligibility Applicants from across the Global South are eligible to apply. Ideal candidates include: Translators, scholars, or researchers with experience in literary or academic translation. Individuals with a demonstrated capacity to complete translation projects within the fellowship timeline. Applicants proposing translations of works originating in Africa or the African Diaspora, in any language. While English and Arabic are preferred, translations into other languages will also be considered. The fellowship is inclusive of various types of projects, including: Retranslations of classical or previously translated works. Previously untranslated texts, including poetry, prose, critical essays, or theoretical works. Newly conceived translation projects feasible for completion within the fellowship period. Fellowship Benefits Grant Funding: Recipients receive between $1,000 and $5,000, with the first installment disbursed at the outset of the project and the second upon completion. Archival Support: Recipients submit a completed copy of their translation for archival purposes at The Africa Institute. Translations will not be published or used without the awardee’s consent. Global Recognition: The fellowship provides visibility for translators and their projects within the international academic and literary community. Selection Criteria Applications will be reviewed by The Africa Institute’s faculty and research fellows. Selection will be based on: Quality and feasibility of the proposed translation project. Applicant’s demonstrated experience and capacity to complete the translation successfully. Contribution of the project to making African and African Diaspora texts accessible to a wider audience. Relevance and potential impact of the work within African and Global South literary and scholarly landscapes.
