Yale University is inviting applications for a Postgraduate Research Associate position in the Canto-Pastor Lab within the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology in New Haven, Connecticut, United States. The opportunity is particularly relevant to recent graduates seeking to strengthen their research experience before pursuing postgraduate study in biology, biotechnology, molecular sciences or related disciplines. The research associate will contribute to research focused on plant developmental biology, cell biology, systems biology, molecular biology and biochemistry, with particular emphasis on how plants perceive and respond to microbial interactions at the cellular and whole-plant levels. Research Focus The Canto-Pastor Lab investigates the mechanisms through which plants detect microbial signals and coordinate cellular responses into broader plant immune outcomes. A major area of research examines how cells within plant roots acquire their developmental identities and how these identities influence their ability to detect and respond to microbes. The position provides an opportunity for an early-career researcher to work within an interdisciplinary laboratory environment and gain practical experience in both experimental and computational research. Key areas of research and training include: Plant developmental biology and cellular identity. Plant-microbe interactions. Molecular biology and biochemistry. Microscopy and cellular imaging. Plant and microbial culture. Computational analysis of research data. Experimental design, execution and interpretation. Scientific writing and oral communication. The successful candidate will work closely with Dr. Alex Canto-Pastor and other members of the research team. Through this collaboration, the associate will develop practical laboratory skills while learning how to design experiments, analyse results and communicate scientific findings effectively. Training and Professional Development The Yale position is structured to provide substantial research training and mentorship. In addition to laboratory-based activities, the research associate will participate in laboratory meetings and journal clubs, where they will be expected to present research findings, ideas and scientific discussions. The position also provides mentorship in written and oral scientific communication. These opportunities can help candidates develop the professional and academic skills required for future graduate study or careers in biological research. The role is particularly suited to recent university graduates who want to obtain additional research experience before applying for master’s, doctoral or other advanced research programmes. Salary and Appointment The appointment is initially for one year, with the possibility of renewal for an additional year depending on circumstances and continued availability.
