Applications close on 9 August 2026, with interviews scheduled for 20 August 2026. The successful candidates will join the newly established Centre for Sustainable Structural Transformation (CSST), a research hub within the SOAS Economics Department dedicated to developing evidence-based strategies for environmentally and socially sustainable economic transformation across developing countries, particularly in Africa and Southeast Asia. Researchers will work under the leadership of renowned development economists Professor Ha-Joon Chang and Professor Antonio Andreoni, collaborating with fellow researchers, policy specialists, and an international network of academics and practitioners from the Global South. The positions focus on advancing research in several priority areas central to sustainable development, including: Energy transition Agriculture and food systems Livelihoods, work and skills Global value chains and international trade Industrial policy Domestic resource mobilisation According to the vacancy announcement, postdoctoral researchers will contribute throughout the research cycle, including designing collaborative projects, conducting policy-relevant research, publishing high-impact academic papers, participating in dissemination activities, and engaging directly with policymakers and other stakeholders. SOAS is seeking applicants with expertise in disciplines such as economics, development studies, geography, business, politics, engineering, or related fields. Candidates should possess strong quantitative or qualitative research skills and demonstrate the ability to generate evidence that informs both academic debates and public policy. Applicants are expected to have completed, or be close to completing, a PhD in a relevant discipline. While regional expertise in Africa or Southeast Asia is considered advantageous, it is not a mandatory requirement. The university highlighted that the CSST aims to produce practical policy recommendations to help governments and private-sector actors coordinate efforts toward sustainable industrialisation and economic diversification. As the centre expands, additional research streams may be introduced in response to emerging funding opportunities, partnerships, and policy demands. Beyond the research role, SOAS offers a comprehensive employment package designed to support professional development and employee wellbeing. Benefits include 44 days of annual leave, a generous occupational pension scheme, flexible working arrangements, enhanced family leave provisions, professional learning opportunities, an Employee Assistance Programme, and discounted gym membership.
