The Stockholm University is seeking a full-time Research Assistant to join the Institute for International Economic Studies (IIES) in Stockholm, Sweden. Role Overview The Research Assistant will contribute to multiple ongoing research projects that use large-scale administrative microdata and experimental datasets from Brazil. These projects investigate key topics related to labor markets, economic behavior, and skills development. Research themes include: Skill formation and human capital development Labor market matching and employment dynamics Firm behavior and organizational decision-making Belief formation and expectations in labor markets The research combines several advanced methodologies, including: Experimental research methods Reduced-form econometric analysis Text-as-data techniques Large-scale administrative data analysis These approaches help address policy-relevant questions related to labor markets, education, and economic development. Key Responsibilities The Research Assistant will play an active role in multiple stages of the empirical research process. Primary tasks include: Data Construction and Management Building, cleaning, and linking large administrative and survey datasets Managing complex data structures and preparing datasets for analysis Programming and Data Processing Working with statistical software such as: Stata R Python Implementing reproducible data cleaning and analysis pipelines Documenting workflows to ensure transparency and reproducibility Econometric Analysis Conducting econometric analysis of large datasets Performing robustness checks and replication exercises Supporting empirical research design and testing Text-as-Data Applications Applying text analysis techniques to job vacancy and CV datasets Processing unstructured text to extract relevant economic insights The selected candidate will work directly with the project leader and receive regular feedback and research guidance throughout the appointment. Qualification Requirements Applicants should possess a strong quantitative background and a demonstrated interest in empirical economic research. Required qualifications include: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in: Economics Statistics Data Science Mathematics Computer Science Engineering Or a closely related quantitative discipline Strong programming skills in at least one of the following: Stata R Python Willingness to learn Stata, which serves as the primary programming language used in the project. Experience working with data, including: Cleaning datasets Merging datasets Transforming large datasets Ability to: Debug code effectively Work independently on technical tasks Produce well-documented and transparent code Fluency in English, both spoken and written, as it is the working language of the institute. Preferred Qualifications Candidates with additional technical or research experience will be considered particularly competitive. Preferred qualifications include: Experience working with large administrative datasets, especially employer–employee matched datasets such as Brazil’s RAIS database Familiarity with text-as-data methods and natural language processing techniques Advanced training in econometrics, including: Causal inference Panel data analysis Advanced econometric modeling Ability to read technical documentation and administrative materials in Portuguese (an advantage but not required) Candidate Profile The ideal candidate demonstrates strong analytical and professional qualities, including: Curiosity and motivation to learn new research methods and programming tools Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work Ability to follow established research protocols while working independently Clear documentation practices to ensure reproducibility and transparency Effective communication with team members and the ability to raise questions when needed During the recruitment process, personal qualities and research potential will be given significant consideration.
