Students On Ice (SOI) invites youth aged 14 to 35 to participate in its 2026 expedition season. SOI’s programs create transformative, experiential learning opportunities that cultivate global youth leaders. These expeditions unite diverse youth and educators in immersive environments, encouraging participants to engage actively with pressing environmental and social challenges while fostering leadership, collaboration, and cultural understanding. Youth Participant Philosophy SOI expeditions are designed as learning journeys, not vacation experiences. Participants are expected to demonstrate commitment, passion, and curiosity before, during, and after the expedition. Pre-expedition content and post-expedition engagement with the global SOI Alumni network ensure that learning is continuous and impactful. The program actively promotes diversity, with a focus on including Indigenous, Black, and underrepresented youth from across the globe. Participants may include those who have already found their path and seek connection with like-minded peers, as well as youth seeking inspiration and direction. This diversity of experiences and perspectives enriches the learning environment and fosters collaboration, creativity, and personal growth. Program Commitments Youth applicants are required to demonstrate: Educational Engagement: A strong understanding that the expedition is an educational experience, not a recreational trip. Immersive Participation: Willingness to fully engage in all aspects of the program. Community Ambassadorship: Acceptance of responsibility as a representative of their communities. Cultural Learning: Commitment to engage with both Indigenous and Western knowledge systems. Additional qualities that strengthen applications include: Curiosity and eagerness to learn. Motivation and drive to actively participate. Demonstrated or potential leadership capacity. Passion, empathy, and a commitment to contribute positively to team and community. Dedication to sharing insights and knowledge gained with their communities. Expedition Opportunities The 2026 SOI expeditions focus on ocean conservation, climate action, Indigenous-led initiatives, and Arctic environmental issues. Participants will be exposed to hands-on scientific research, cross-cultural learning, and leadership development activities that connect local insights with global environmental challenges. All expeditions are designed to immerse youth in authentic learning environments that combine fieldwork, cultural engagement, and mentorship. Participants will develop skills in teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership, while gaining a deeper understanding of complex environmental systems and Indigenous knowledge. Scholarships and Access SOI provides full scholarships to ensure accessibility for youth from diverse backgrounds. Early applications are strongly encouraged, as spaces are limited and selection is competitive. The program seeks applicants who demonstrate both potential and commitment to becoming active environmental leaders in their communities. Application Process SOI has streamlined its application process, allowing candidates to submit a single application for consideration across all expeditions. Selected participants will be matched to expeditions that align with their skills, interests, and goals. Key details: Eligibility: Youth aged 14–35. Application Deadline: 4 December 2025. Selection Process: Based on demonstrated commitment, leadership potential, and alignment with expedition goals. Selected participants will receive guidance on expedition preparation, pre-learning content, and integration into the SOI Alumni network, which provides ongoing support and opportunities for engagement after the expedition concludes. Why Join SOI Expeditions? SOI expeditions offer a life-changing experience for youth passionate about environmental stewardship and leadership. Participants gain: Practical skills in conservation, climate action, and research. Exposure to Indigenous-led initiatives and knowledge systems. Opportunities to connect with peers, educators, and professionals from around the world. A platform to take action and advocate for environmental and social change in their communities. The program’s immersive approach ensures that participants return home not only with knowledge but also with a sense of purpose, inspiration, and actionable strategies to make a difference locally and globally.
