Fully Funded Walsh Scholars Programme Ireland’s leading agriculture and food development authority, Teagasc, has announced new opportunities under its prestigious Walsh Scholars Programme, offering fully funded PhD and MSc scholarships for graduates pursuing advanced research in agriculture, food, environment, climate, and rural development. The programme continues to attract emerging researchers from around the world by providing high-level academic training combined with real-world research experience that addresses national and global challenges in sustainability, food security, climate resilience, and agricultural innovation. Walsh Scholars Programme Strengthens Agricultural Research Excellence The Teagasc Walsh Scholars Programme is widely recognised as one of Ireland’s premier postgraduate research training initiatives. Scholars are based across Teagasc’s national research centres and partner universities, where they work within multidisciplinary teams on projects designed to create meaningful scientific and societal impact. The programme supports research across several key sectors, including: Agriculture and livestock systems Food science and dairy innovation Environmental sustainability Climate and emissions research Rural economy and development Crop science and grassland systems By combining academic excellence with industry-focused research, the programme prepares scholars to become future leaders in scientific innovation and sustainable development. Wide Range of PhD and MSc Opportunities Available Teagasc has released several postgraduate opportunities for the 2026 intake, covering critical areas such as dairy sustainability, livestock systems, crop productivity, food innovation, and environmental modelling. Among the available opportunities are: PhD Opportunity 2017273 – Environmental Modelling of Irish Dairy Systems This research project focuses on enhancing environmental modelling within Irish grass-based dairy systems to improve sustainability and climate performance. Closing Date: June 26, 2026, at 5:00 PM MSc Opportunity 2024014 – Irish Pot Still Whiskey Production The MSc project explores the use of native grain crops to optimise Irish pot still whiskey production and improve crop diversification strategies. Closing Date: July 3, 2026, at 5:00 PM PhD Opportunity 2025202 – Perennial Ryegrass Productivity This study aims to improve productivity and sustainability in grass-based livestock systems through enhanced perennial ryegrass traits. PhD Opportunity 2025206 – Bio-Economic Modelling for Hill Sheep Farming Researchers will design a full farm system bio-economic model focused on improving efficiency and sustainability in the Irish hill sheep industry. PhD Opportunity 2025207 – Reducing Slaughter Age in Irish Beef Cattle This project investigates genetics and advisory innovations aimed at reducing slaughter age and improving beef production systems. PhD Opportunity 2025210 – Methane Inhibitors and Dairy Quality The research examines the impact of methane inhibitors on rumen composition, milk quality, and dairy product performance. Dairy Protein Innovation Research Opportunities Additional PhD projects focus on improving dairy manufacturing efficiency and product functionality through advanced protein variant selection. Focus on Sustainability and Climate Innovation Many of the current Walsh Scholar projects reflect growing international concern around climate change, sustainable agriculture, and emissions reduction. Research themes include: Nitrogen management strategies Methane reduction technologies Sustainable livestock productivity Grassland optimisation Dairy product innovation Climate-smart farming systems Teagasc stated that these projects are designed to support evidence-based solutions that can strengthen food systems while protecting environmental resources.
