The Digital Orientalist (DO) has officially launched its annual Call for Applications (CFA) for contributors and team members for the 2026–2027 academic year, inviting scholars, graduate students, early career researchers, and digital humanities practitioners from around the world to join its growing international community. The open call seeks individuals working at the intersection of digital humanities and area studies, offering opportunities to publish accessible research, collaborate with global peers, and contribute to the advancement of digital scholarship across diverse disciplines. Applications are open until 19 July 2026, with successful candidates expected to begin contributing during the September 2026–May 2027 publication cycle. Expanding Digital Humanities Across Global Area Studies The Digital Orientalist continues its mission of showcasing innovative research that combines digital tools, methods, and theoretical approaches with regional and cultural studies. The publication currently welcomes expertise in several established fields, including: African Studies Central Asian Studies Chinese Studies Digital Humanities Theory and Practice Middle Eastern Studies Northeast Asian Studies Persian, Turkic, and Biblical Studies South Asian Studies Southeast Asian Studies This year’s recruitment also encourages applications from emerging and interdisciplinary fields that expand the publication’s global reach. These include: Oceania Studies Pacific Island Studies GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) Librarianship Digital Heritage Archival Studies Applicants from related disciplines are encouraged to demonstrate how their work connects with digital humanities methodologies, technologies, or theoretical frameworks. Opportunities for Graduate Students and Early Career Researchers The call is expected to be particularly attractive to graduate students and early career academics seeking opportunities to develop their professional profiles while engaging with an international scholarly community. Successful applicants will benefit from: Publishing short-form articles for a broad international audience Collaborating with researchers across multiple disciplines Receiving editorial guidance and constructive feedback Building experience in academic communication Expanding professional networks within digital humanities The Digital Orientalist emphasizes accessibility, encouraging contributors to communicate complex digital humanities topics in ways that reach both specialists and wider audiences. Contributor Positions Available The publication is recruiting contributors at several levels depending on applicants’ availability and experience. Available editorial positions include: Leading Contributors Contributors Guest Contributors Applicants will be asked to submit topic ideas as part of their application. Expected annual writing commitments include: Leading Contributors: 5–6 articles Contributors: 3–4 articles Guest Contributors: 2 articles Articles generally range between 500 and 1,500 words and are published throughout the academic year between September 2026 and May 2027. Researchers interested in writing a single article without joining the editorial team may still submit one-off contributions throughout the year, as submissions remain open on a rolling basis. Digital Communications Roles Also Available In addition to editorial positions, The Digital Orientalist is recruiting volunteers to strengthen its digital communications and online presence. Available roles include: Social Media Managers Newsletter Editor Website Designers Social media managers will help create and publish content across platforms including: Bluesky Facebook Instagram LinkedIn Meanwhile, the newsletter editor will oversee the publication’s monthly newsletter, while website designers will contribute to improving and maintaining the platform’s functionality and user experience. Applicants are encouraged to indicate their preferred role and areas of interest during the application process.
