Call for Editor(s): Lead a Global Academic Conversation in New Media & Society The internationally renowned journal New Media & Society is inviting applications for 1–2 Editors to take on a pivotal leadership role in shaping scholarship on digital media and society. As current editor Steve Jones prepares to step down in June 2026, this transition presents an exciting opportunity for experienced academics to influence one of the most dynamic fields of interdisciplinary research. About the Journal New Media & Society is a leading peer-reviewed journal that explores the social, cultural, political, and economic implications of digital technologies. Published monthly by SAGE Publishing, the journal serves as a platform for cutting-edge research across both the social sciences and humanities. Its scope is broad and interdisciplinary, covering areas such as: Digitalization and technological convergence Online communities, identity, and culture Media consumption and digital citizenship Innovation, governance, and regulation of digital spaces Inequalities in access and use of technology The politics and sociology of cyberspace The journal receives a high volume of submissions—approximately 300 to 400 manuscripts per month—reflecting its global reach and influence. The Role of Editor Given the scale of operations, the journal is seeking one or two Editors who can share responsibilities and collaborate effectively. This is a senior academic leadership role that combines strategic vision with hands-on editorial management. Key responsibilities include: Leading the journal’s strategic direction, with a focus on maintaining and enhancing its academic quality and impact Overseeing the peer review process, including submission management and editorial decisions Working closely with Associate Editors, reviewers, and authors Making final decisions on manuscript publication Managing and developing the editorial board Coordinating with the publisher to meet production timelines Leading editorial meetings and contributing to annual board discussions Editors will also play a central role in shaping the intellectual direction of the journal and ensuring it remains responsive to emerging trends in new media research. Candidate Profile The ideal candidate is an established scholar with a strong track record in new media or a related field. Applicants should meet the following essential criteria: A higher degree in a relevant research discipline At least five years of professional or academic experience A strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals International academic or professional networks A commitment to inclusive and multicultural scholarship Excellent organisational, interpersonal, and teamwork skills Ability to manage a high workload and meet deadlines Additional advantages include prior editorial experience and familiarity with manuscript management systems such as ScholarOne. Time Commitment and Transition This is a demanding role due to the high volume of submissions and the journal’s monthly publication schedule. Applicants should carefully consider the time commitment involved. The new Editor(s) will officially begin in June 2026, with a transition period starting in late May to ensure a smooth handover.
