The University of Exeter has opened applications for the A.S. Hornby Educational Trust Scholarship 2027/28, offering up to 10 fully funded scholarships for experienced English language teachers and related professionals from eligible low- and middle-income countries. The scholarships are intended for professionals who have demonstrated academic ability, relevant teaching or professional experience, and the potential to make a meaningful contribution to English language teaching and learning in their home countries. Successful scholars will study the MEd TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) programme at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom, beginning in September 2027. The scholarship provides full tuition fees, a monthly stipend for accommodation and living costs, and return international travel expenses. The application deadline is 22 November 2026. University of Exeter Hornby Scholarship 2027 The A.S. Hornby Educational Trust focuses on strengthening English language teaching capacity in low- and middle-income countries. Through its partnership with the University of Exeter, the Trust will support up to 10 academically talented and experienced professionals to undertake the MEd TESOL programme. The scholarship is specifically designed for professionals who can use the knowledge and skills gained during their studies to contribute to English language teaching and learning in their home countries. The opportunity is available only for the MEd TESOL programme. Applicants cannot use the scholarship to study the University’s PGCert or PGDip programmes. What the Scholarship Covers The A.S. Hornby Educational Trust Scholarship is a fully funded opportunity covering key costs associated with studying in the UK. Each successful scholar will receive: Full tuition fees for the MEd TESOL programme. A monthly stipend to cover accommodation and living expenses. Return international travel costs. Funding for one year of study. Up to 10 scholarships will be awarded for the September 2027 intake. The scholarship therefore provides substantial financial support to experienced English language professionals who may otherwise face financial barriers to postgraduate study in the United Kingdom. Who Can Apply? The scholarship is targeted at experienced English language teachers and related professionals working in countries classified by the OECD Development Assistance Committee (DAC) as Least Developed, Low Income, Lower Middle Income or Upper Middle Income countries. Applicants must meet several eligibility requirements. Candidates must: Be a resident of and work in an eligible country under the OECD DAC classification. Have at least three years of full-time TESOL teaching or related professional experience after obtaining their first degree. Hold an undergraduate degree equivalent to at least a UK upper second-class honours degree, or hold a relevant postgraduate degree. Demonstrate the potential to contribute to English language teaching and learning in their home country. Meet the University of Exeter’s admission requirements for the MEd TESOL programme. Applicants should carefully check the current OECD DAC country classification before applying to confirm that their country is eligible. Who Is Not Eligible? The scholarship has specific restrictions regarding previous postgraduate study. Applicants are not eligible if they: Already hold a doctoral degree in TESOL, applied linguistics, English or a related field. Already hold a master’s degree from a UK university in TESOL, applied linguistics, English or a related area. The scholarship is intended to support professionals who would benefit from advanced postgraduate training in TESOL and can subsequently apply their knowledge to strengthen the sector in their home country. No Initial MEd TESOL Application Required One notable feature of the application process is that candidates do not need to apply for the MEd TESOL programme before submitting the Hornby Scholarship application. Applicants should first complete the Hornby Scholarship application form. The University of Exeter will assess applications jointly with the Hornby Educational Trust. Candidates who are shortlisted for interview will then receive instructions on how to apply for the MEd TESOL programme. However, all scholarship awards remain conditional on successful application to the University of Exeter’s MEd TESOL programme. Application Timeline Prospective applicants should pay close attention to the scholarship timetable. Important dates include: Application deadline: 22 November 2026 Shortlisted applicants notified: No later than 5 January 2027 Interviews: 15–24 February 2027 Final scholarship outcome: No later than 4 March 2027 Programme start: September 2027 Candidates should submit their scholarship applications before the November deadline and ensure that all information provided accurately demonstrates their professional experience, academic background and potential impact. Selection and Impact The Hornby Scholarship is aimed at professionals who can contribute to the development of English language teaching in their countries after completing their studies. Academic ability is therefore important, but applicants should also demonstrate relevant professional experience and potential to create positive impact. The programme can be particularly valuable for teachers, teacher educators and other English language teaching professionals who want to strengthen their expertise and contribute to improvements in teaching, learning, training or policy within their home countries. Important Scholarship Conditions Applicants should be aware of several conditions attached to the award. Hornby Scholarships generally cannot be combined with another scholarship. If a successful candidate receives another scholarship, the Hornby Scholarship will only be awarded where it is greater than the alternative award. Applicants should also be aware that deferring their University of Exeter offer or changing their fee status could result in the scholarship being invalidated or withdrawn. Successful candidates who withdraw from or interrupt their studies after enrolment may also be subject to the University’s applicable financial regulations.
