The University of Glasgow African Excellence Award is a prestigious scholarship initiative designed to support high-achieving students from across Africa who aspire to become future global changemakers. This award targets academically outstanding individuals who wish to pursue postgraduate taught Master’s level study and who demonstrate a strong commitment to using their education to positively impact their communities and contribute to sustainable development. Through this scholarship, the University of Glasgow reinforces its commitment to global inclusion, academic excellence, and the empowerment of talented students from Africa by removing financial barriers to world-class education. Overview of the Award The African Excellence Award is offered to international students from Africa who are commencing a one-year postgraduate taught Master’s programme during the 2026/27 academic session. The scholarship provides a full tuition fee waiver, enabling recipients to focus fully on academic and professional development. Key Features Supports future leaders and change agents from Africa Encourages academic excellence and community-focused impact Open to applicants across all academic disciplines Designed for full-time, one-year postgraduate taught Master’s programmes Postgraduate diploma and certificate programmes are not eligible under this award. Number and Value of Scholarships Number of awards: Up to 16 scholarships Value: Full tuition fee waiver Duration: One academic year Study level: Postgraduate taught Master’s programmes The scholarship does not cover living expenses, accommodation, travel, or other personal costs. Eligibility Criteria Applicants must meet all of the following requirements to be considered for the African Excellence Award: Academic and Programme Requirements Demonstrate academic excellence equivalent to a UK First Class Honours degree Apply for, and ultimately hold, an offer for a one-year postgraduate taught Master’s programme starting in September 2026 Postgraduate diploma or certificate programmes are not eligible An offer of admission is not required at the time of scholarship application, but shortlisted candidates must hold an offer to proceed to the interview stage. Residency and Fee Status Hold international fee status Be domiciled in Africa Hold a passport from one of the eligible African countries Career and Development Commitment Clearly demonstrate a career and/or development plan Show how Master’s level study at the University of Glasgow will support future professional goals and community impact Immigration and Financial Compliance Meet the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) living cost requirements for international students Applicants are encouraged to review UKVI financial guidance in advance Application Process Eligible candidates must submit a formal scholarship application through the University of Glasgow’s online system. Steps to Apply Apply for a postgraduate taught Master’s programme at the University of Glasgow Receive a student ID and application number Complete and submit the African Excellence Award application form before the deadline Applicants are advised to carefully consider programme-specific application timelines to ensure sufficient time for both academic and scholarship applications. Important Dates Scholarship application deadline: 31 March 2026 at 23:59 (UK time) Interview notifications: Shortlisted candidates will be contacted by 8 May 2026 Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. Scholarship Conditions and Limitations To ensure fair distribution of funding opportunities: University of Glasgow scholarships and tuition discounts cannot be combined External sponsorship discounts are not permitted, with the exception of the Alumni Discount If a student is offered more than one scholarship, the lower-value award will be removed This policy allows the University to support as many eligible self-funded students as possible. Selection Process Applications are assessed based on: Academic merit and consistency of excellence Strength and clarity of career and development goals Potential for long-term contribution to community and society Alignment between the chosen Master’s programme and future impact plans Shortlisted candidates may be invited for an interview as part of the final selection process.
