After leaving Austria in 1938, Tietze pursued his academic career at Istanbul University before joining the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) as Professor of Turkish. He returned to the University of Vienna in 1973, where he served as Professor of Theology and a faculty member in the Department of Near Eastern Studies until his retirement in 1984. Throughout his career, Tietze published extensively on Turkish lexicology, etymology, history, folklore, and cultural studies, earning international recognition for his significant contributions to the field. The annual fellowship continues this legacy by supporting innovative research that advances Turkish Studies while strengthening international scholarly collaboration. Fellowship Overview The Andreas Tietze Memorial Fellowship 2027 is designed for researchers undertaking original projects in Turkish Studies. The programme particularly welcomes research requiring access to Vienna’s extensive scholarly resources or projects that complement the Department’s current research priorities. Fellowship Benefits Successful fellows will receive financial and institutional support to undertake their research at the University of Vienna. Eligibility Requirements Applicants must satisfy the following eligibility criteria: • Be an advanced doctoral candidate with ABD (All But Dissertation) status, or • Be a postdoctoral or early-stage researcher who obtained a PhD no more than five years ago. • Demonstrate a high level of proficiency in English. • German language skills are advantageous but not mandatory. • Propose an original research project in Turkish Studies.
