Description

The United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER) offers a prestigious Visiting PhD Fellowship Programme designed for doctoral students conducting research on developing economies. The fellowship provides an opportunity for PhD candidates to access world-class research resources, collaborate with leading development economists, and contribute to policy-relevant scholarship. Hosted in Helsinki, Finland, the programme enables visiting fellows to work closely with UNU-WIDER researchers on topics that align with the institute’s research agenda. Participants gain valuable exposure to an international academic environment while strengthening their doctoral research and expanding their professional networks. The next application cycle opens 1 March 2026, with the application deadline set for 31 March 2026 at 23:59 (UTC+3). About the Programme The Visiting PhD Fellowship Programme provides registered doctoral students with the opportunity to utilize the facilities and intellectual resources at **United Nations University’s research institute, United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research. Key activities during the fellowship include: Conducting research related to developing economies Preparing one or more academic research papers Presenting a seminar on research findings Collaborating with experts working on related research themes Potentially publishing work in the WIDER Working Paper Series The programme provides an intellectually stimulating environment where fellows can refine their research, receive feedback from leading scholars, and contribute to policy-relevant discussions on development economics. Due to its international reputation and limited capacity, the fellowship is highly competitive, with approximately one percent of applicants typically selected in recent years. Financial Support UNU-WIDER provides financial assistance to support fellows during their stay in Helsinki. The fellowship package includes: Travel grant covering transportation to and from the fellow’s home institution or country of residence Medical insurance for sickness or accidents during the fellowship period Monthly stipend of EUR 2,070 to support living expenses in Helsinki The financial support is designed to ensure fellows can focus fully on their research and academic collaboration during the programme.
