Overview The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars invites scholars, practitioners, journalists, and public intellectuals to apply for its flagship Research Fellowship Program for the 2026–2027 cycle. The program supports nonpartisan, policy-relevant research addressing critical foreign policy challenges facing the United States and the world. Fellows engage directly with the Center’s mission of bridging scholarship and public policy, while also interacting with Washington-based policymakers and experts throughout the fellowship year. About the Wilson Center Established by the U.S. Congress in 1968, the Wilson Center serves as the official national memorial to President Woodrow Wilson. Unlike a traditional monument, it operates as a living institution that promotes rigorous, evidence-based scholarship and fosters dialogue between thinkers and policymakers. The Center remains committed to nonpartisan research that informs policy debates without advocating for a specific political agenda. Its work reflects President Wilson’s vision that scholars and policymakers share a common enterprise. Fellowship Details The Wilson Center will award a new cohort of fellows for the 2026–2027 academic year. Stipend and Duration Fellowship period: June 1, 2026 – May 30, 2027 Monthly stipend: $10,000 Total duration: 12 months Working Arrangement Fellows will work remotely throughout the fellowship. The Wilson Center will sponsor two trips to Washington, D.C.: a program start meeting and a closing meeting. Fellow Responsibilities Fellows are expected to: Conduct and complete the proposed research project. Deliver a Work in Progress presentation for internal feedback. Attend presentations by other fellows. Engage with the Washington policy community through briefings, discussions, and events. Participate in public seminars, workshops, or colloquia as required. Produce policy-relevant outputs such as reports, articles, or op-eds. Translate academic research into accessible, policy-relevant insights with support from the Center. Fellows also gain access to: Wilson Center Library resources Library of Congress loan privileges Digital collections and university library networks Application Deadline All applications, including letters of recommendation, must be submitted online by:January 16, 2026 at 11:59 PM ET Applicants will be notified of results in early March 2026. Applicant Eligibility Eligibility Criteria for Individuals Applicants must meet one of the following: Academics: Hold a PhD and have published a book or monograph beyond the dissertation. Practitioners, journalists, policymakers, or nonprofit leaders: Possess at least 10 years of relevant professional experience, demonstrated policy impact, leadership, or a strong publication record. Additional requirements: Proficiency in English Institutional affiliation not required Previous Wilson Center fellows may apply (recency and nature of prior award considered) Applicants may take leave from their institutions or maintain other affiliations, but must demonstrate the ability to meet fellowship obligations Eligibility for Project Proposals Project proposals must be: Nonpartisan Focused on at least one of the Wilson Center’s four scholarship pillars: Strategic competition Economic statecraft Technology and innovation Regional scholarship Aimed at producing high-quality scholarly outputs (e.g., a book manuscript, long-form articles, or policymaker roundtable series) Projects cannot include: Dissertation rewrites or completions Creative arts projects (visual arts, dance, music) Text or document editing Textbook, translation, anthology, or memoir preparation Selection Process Eligible applications undergo a rigorous, multi-stage review involving internal and external experts. Final decisions are approved by the Center’s Board of Trustees, pending available funding. Selection is based on: Significance and originality of the research Urgency and relevance to major foreign policy issues Policy relevance and potential impact Quality and clarity of the proposal Applicant’s ability to complete the project successfully Capacity to engage with policymakers and contribute to the Center’s mission Projects should demonstrate fresh research and connect narrowly focused issues to broader policy debates.
