WRITEABILITY® Fellows Program 2027–2028: Fully Funded Writing Residency and Year-Long Mentorship for Black and Native American Writers
globalsouthopportunities.com

Application Deadline

November 18, 2026

Description

The WRITEABILITY® Fellows Program 2027–2028 is offering developing writers an opportunity to strengthen their creative practice through a fully funded writing residency, structured mentorship, and a year-long community of fellow writers. The initiative is designed for African American, African, Black, and Native American/Alaska Native writers who want to develop their prose writing skills and establish a sustainable writing practice. Sponsored by a generous donor, the programme will select up to five Fellows for its inaugural 2027–2028 cohort. Successful applicants will receive financial support for the annual WRITEABILITY® Residency, access to the organisation’s Sustaining Circle, opportunities to present their work, and potential one-to-one mentoring. Applications open on 1 October 2026 and will close when 30 applications have been received or on 30 October 2026, whichever occurs first. Eligible writers are strongly encouraged to apply early because the application window may close before the final date. About the WRITEABILITY® Fellows Program WRITEABILITY® is a nonprofit organisation dedicated to defending the imagination and supporting writers. Its Fellows Program aims to help developing writers make meaningful progress by providing dedicated writing time, opportunities to share work in progress, practical resources, accountability, and a supportive creative community. The inaugural Fellowship will begin with an in-person residency in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, followed by a year of structured online engagement. The programme is intended for writers who are committed to prose and want to integrate writing into their personal and professional lives in sustainable ways. Although the initiative is designed to operate across the 2027–2028 and 2028–2029 programming seasons, applicants applying in 2026 will be considered for the 2027–2028 Fellowship cohort. Fellowship Benefits and Financial Support Selected Fellows will receive the following benefits: 1. Fully funded writing residency Fellows will attend the annual WRITEABILITY® Residency at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, from 3–9 May 2027. The award provides up to $1,500 toward residency participation, covering registration, meals, accommodation, and programme experiences. Approximately $600 may be available as optional travel reimbursement for eligible travel to Gatlinburg. 2. Year-long writing community Fellows will receive membership in WRITEABILITY®’s Sustaining Circle, valued at $804 annually. The group meets online through Zoom every Thursday from noon to 1:30 p.m. Eastern Time during the Fellowship period, with December and July off. 3. Mentorship opportunities Participants may request one-to-one communication with a mentor from the WRITEABILITY® Guild or Board, with up to four meetings per year. 4. Opportunities to share creative work Fellows will present readings from their work in progress during the in-person residency and at an online event at the conclusion of the year-long programme. These opportunities provide a platform to share developing work and engage with a wider writing community. Eligibility Requirements The Fellowship is intended for developing writers who meet the programme’s specific criteria. Applicants must: Identify as African American, African, Black, or Native American/Alaska Native. Have never attended a writing residency. Have never published a book, including a self-published book. Have never earned a graduate-level degree in any genre of creative writing. Not currently be receiving a WRITEABILITY® scholarship for the 2026–2027 period. Previous scholarship recipients remain eligible. Demonstrate dedication to prose writing and maintain a regular writing practice. Want to integrate writing into their work and personal lives in sustainable ways. Be willing to explore their creative process through self-guided inquiry, mentoring or facilitated experiences, and community accountability. Be available to attend the entire in-person residency from 3–9 May 2027. Be available for Thursday Zoom sessions from noon to 1:30 p.m. Eastern Time between 6 May 2027 and 13 April 2028, with at least 80% attendance required. Commit to participating in one in-person reading and one online reading organised by WRITEABILITY®. Respond to programme communications promptly, generally within three business days. Applicants should consult the official programme FAQ for further clarification about prose writing, the narrative application, and the writing sample. Programme Dates and Application Deadline Applications open: 1 October 2026 Application deadline: 30 October 2026, or when 30 applications have been received, whichever comes first In-person residency: 3–9 May 2027 Fellowship period: May 2027–April 2028 Number of Fellows: Up to five Residency location: Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, Gatlinburg, Tennessee, USA Online engagement: Weekly Thursday Zoom sessions, with December and July off WRITEABILITY® reserves the right to reopen applications if its initial review does not identify five successful applicants. How to Strengthen an Application Applicants should prepare a clear narrative explaining their commitment to prose writing and how writing fits into their current lives. A regular writing practice, a willingness to reflect on the creative process, and a realistic plan for sustaining writing alongside other responsibilities are important themes to address. The writing sample should demonstrate the applicant’s voice, storytelling ability, and potential for further development. Applicants should also confirm their availability for the full residency and online sessions before applying. Because the programme may stop accepting applications after receiving 30 submissions, early preparation is particularly important. Why This Fellowship Matters The WRITEABILITY® Fellows Program offers more than financial assistance. It combines dedicated writing time, a residency experience, structured accountability, mentoring opportunities, and a supportive community. For eligible writers who have not previously attended a residency or completed graduate-level creative writing studies, the Fellowship can provide an important opportunity to develop their craft and build a sustainable creative practice. How to Apply Interested applicants should visit the official WRITEABILITY® Fellows Program webpage, review the eligibility requirements and FAQs, and complete the application through the organisation’s official application route. Applicants are encouraged to confirm the application link, submission requirements, and any updates directly with WRITEABILITY® before submitting their materials.
