Recognising that pregnancy, parental leave, and adoption often coincide with pivotal stages of scientific careers, this grant programme aims to ensure continuity in research and reduce career disadvantage during periods of caregiving. Parenthood-related responsibilities can interrupt research momentum, sometimes resulting in perceived reductions in competitiveness. The IBRO Parenthood Grant directly addresses these challenges by providing flexible funding that helps researchers sustain progress in their scientific work. The programme empowers researchers to balance personal circumstances with professional goals, ensuring that parental responsibilities do not derail promising scientific careers. By supporting continuity in research activities, IBRO promotes equity, inclusion, and long-term scientific excellence. What the Grant Supports The IBRO Parenthood Grant provides funding for research-related and career-supporting expenses, including but not limited to: Laboratory reagents and consumables Facility or core service costs Outsourcing experiments or data acquisition Transportation of non-commercial samples or reagents Travel and child-care expenses related to conference attendance Grant-writing or scientific consultation services This flexibility allows applicants to tailor the use of funds to their specific needs and research contexts. Who Can Apply? The programme is open to early-career principal investigators who meet the following criteria: Maximum of seven years in an independent PI role At least one peer-reviewed publication as corresponding author Any extended breaks from research (such as previous maternity or adoption leave) are permitted and should be clearly justified in the application In addition, applicants or their partners must meet one of the following conditions: Be at least four months pregnant Have given birth within four months prior to the application deadline Be close to adoption and assuming the role of primary caregiver The programme accepts applications twice per year, with the next application round scheduled to open on 1 July 2026. Grant Specifications and Funding Structure Projects supported through the IBRO Parenthood Grant must be completed within one year from the proposed start date. Grant recipients are required to submit a final report no later than three months after project completion. Funding is distributed using an 80:20 model: 80% of the grant is disbursed two months before the project start date The remaining 20% is released upon project completion and submission of the required report Funds may be transferred to the grantee, their institution, or another directly involved party (such as a departmental chair), with exceptions considered on a case-by-case basis. Maximum Grant Amounts by Region The maximum funding amount varies by region and is determined by the relevant IBRO Regional Committee: Africa: USD 3,000 Asia-Pacific: USD 2,000 Latin America: USD 2,500 Pan-Europe: USD 4,000 United States and Canada: USD 3,000 Applicants are encouraged to consult the full call details for region-specific guidance.
