The African Liberty Writing Fellowship 2026/2027 is now open for applications, offering aspiring writers across Africa a valuable opportunity to develop their skills in opinion writing, public policy analysis, and media engagement. Powered by African Students For Liberty, the fellowship aims to equip young African thinkers with the tools needed to influence public discourse through impactful writing. Selected fellows will receive training, mentorship, and publication opportunities while contributing to conversations around freedom, governance, economics, and development in Africa. About the African Liberty Writing Fellowship The African Liberty Writing Fellowship is a highly competitive programme designed to nurture the next generation of African policy writers and thought leaders. Participants gain practical experience in crafting persuasive articles and commentary on issues affecting the continent. The fellowship begins with an intensive five-week training programme, where participants learn the fundamentals of writing for public audiences. After the training phase, selected fellows continue with the fellowship, publishing articles and engaging in intellectual discussions on policy and governance. Through this initiative, African Liberty seeks to strengthen intellectual discourse and encourage young Africans to actively participate in shaping policy debates. Programme Structure The fellowship is delivered entirely online, making it accessible to participants across Africa and those studying abroad. 5-Week Training Programme The programme starts with a five-week training session from 25 May to 22 June 2026. During this period, selected applicants will receive guidance on: Opinion and policy writing Research and argument development Media engagement Publishing for public audiences Writing Fellowship Phase After completing the training, a select group of participants will be inducted into the official fellowship. The writing fellowship runs from 13 July 2025 to 13 July 2027, during which fellows will regularly publish articles, participate in discussions, and receive editorial mentorship. Fellowship Benefits The African Liberty Writing Fellowship is a paid opportunity, providing financial compensation to fellows. Payments are performance-based and tied to monthly assessments conducted during the fellowship. Additional benefits include: Professional writing and editorial training Opportunities to publish articles on African Liberty platforms Exposure to international audiences Mentorship from experienced editors and policy experts Participation in intellectual debates on African development and governance Programme Competitiveness The fellowship attracts a large number of applicants each year. In the 2025/2026 cycle, approximately 1,900 applications were received. From this pool: 60 applicants were selected for the five-week training programme 33 participants were eventually inducted as writing fellows This highly selective process ensures that fellows receive focused mentorship and opportunities to refine their writing skills. Eligibility Criteria Applicants must meet the following requirements to be considered for the fellowship: Be enrolled in or have graduated from an African institution of higher learning, or Be an African student pursuing higher education outside the continent The fellowship is designed specifically for emerging writers and students. Senior fellowships are not available under this programme. Application Process Interested candidates can apply by submitting their application through the official African Liberty platform. Applicants should ensure they provide accurate personal and academic information during the submission process.
