The Fellowship Programme for 2027/28 invites applications from scholars and practitioners working on innovative projects in international politics. Understanding Comprehensive Security in a Changing World The programme adopts a broad understanding of security that goes beyond traditional defence frameworks. Today, security encompasses multiple interconnected domains, including: Democratic stability Critical infrastructure protection Technological governance Economic resilience These evolving challenges require integrated strategies and forward-thinking approaches. Initiatives such as Germany’s Zeitenwende illustrate the shift toward re-evaluating defence, policy priorities, and international cooperation in response to emerging threats. The fellowship encourages applicants to engage with these dynamics by developing projects that contribute to a deeper and more holistic understanding of international security. Research Areas and Themes Applicants are invited to propose projects that address key issues within international politics and security studies. Relevant topics include: Defence and international security cooperation Governance frameworks and policy innovation Emerging and disruptive technologies Supply chain security and economic resilience Democratic resilience and institutional stability Strategic foresight and risk analysis The programme values interdisciplinary approaches and welcomes insights from political science, economics, technology studies, and related fields. Two Fellowship Tracks To accommodate diverse professional backgrounds, the fellowship offers two distinct tracks: Academic Track This track is designed for researchers whose projects are grounded in academic inquiry. Proposals should: Engage with current or emerging scholarly debates Demonstrate a clear research objective Contribute to advancing knowledge in international politics Applicants must hold a PhD and provide evidence of their academic work, including publications. Practitioner’s Track The practitioner’s track is tailored for professionals working in fields related to international politics, policy, or security. Projects in this track should: Draw on practical, real-world experience Offer insights into policy or operational challenges Contribute to a broader understanding of international political dynamics Application Requirements Applicants must submit a complete application consisting of: Application form Letter of motivation Project proposal (maximum 5 pages, including abstract) outlining: Research questions State of the field Work plan and timeline Expected outputs Added value of conducting the project in Bonn Curriculum Vitae (CV) (maximum 2 pages) Additional Requirements for Academic Track PhD certificate (certified) Full list of publications 2–3 recent academic publications (in English) All documents must be compiled into a single PDF for submission. Fellowship Expectations Selected fellows are expected to reside in Bonn for the duration of the programme, which runs from April 2027 to March 2028. The fellowship emphasizes active participation and collaboration. Fellows are required to: Attend research formats and colloquia regularly Participate in events and academic discussions Contribute to publication outputs Engage in knowledge transfer activities, including public and social media communication This immersive structure ensures that fellows benefit from a dynamic academic environment while contributing meaningfully to ongoing debates.
