Action Against Hunger began operations in Nigeria in 2010, responding to high levels of chronic malnutrition in the country’s northern regions. Today, the organisation implements integrated humanitarian and development programmes across Northeast and Northwest Nigeria, supported by donors including AFD, EU/ECHO, the French Government, GAC, GFFO, SIDA, the United States Government, and the WAM Foundation. To strengthen programme quality and accountability, Action Against Hunger is seeking a qualified MEAL Officer to support monitoring, evaluation, accountability, and learning across FSL, Health and Nutrition, and WASH programmes in Borno State. Role Overview The MEAL Officer will be responsible for supporting the implementation of the MEAL plan across multiple sectors, ensuring high-quality data collection, management, analysis, and reporting. The role will contribute to evidence-based decision-making, programme improvement, and accountability to affected populations. Reporting to the MEAL Manager and based in Maiduguri, the MEAL Officer will work closely with programme teams, civil society organisations, and government counterparts to ensure that monitoring systems are robust, timely, and aligned with organisational standards. Key Responsibilities Objective 1: Data Collection, Data Quality Management, Analysis, and Reporting Support the design and adaptation of MEAL tools, including registers, reporting templates, and databases for FSL, Health and Nutrition, and WASH projects Coordinate timely data collection, compilation, and reporting in line with the approved MEAL plan Conduct monthly data analysis and prepare routine programme monitoring reports Ensure programme databases are regularly updated and well maintained Support feedback meetings with communities, service delivery points, and relevant authorities Assist in implementing the Data Quality Assurance (DQA) system, including periodic data quality assessments Contribute to data management for assessments, surveys, evaluations, and research activities Plan and support the procurement and distribution of MEAL tools and materials to field sites Objective 2: Programme Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning Support monitoring of programme implementation across all targeted communities Communicate findings, challenges, and progress to Programme Managers and technical teams Participate in programme evaluations, with a focus on managing and cleaning evaluation datasets Support the dissemination and use of evaluation findings and research outputs Contribute recommendations to improve programme quality, effectiveness, and learning Objective 3: Documentation, Reporting, Knowledge Sharing, and Feedback Mechanisms Support the preparation of monthly, quarterly, biannual, and annual programme reports Assist in maintaining effective beneficiary feedback and complaints mechanisms Support management and updating of the feedback and complaints database Ensure programme monitoring documents are regularly updated on shared drives and team platforms Contribute to transparent information sharing with communities and stakeholders Required Qualifications and Experience Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Rural Development, Business Administration, Statistics, Demography, or a related field Minimum of 2–3 years’ experience working with local or international NGOs in humanitarian contexts Previous experience supporting FSL, WASH, and Health and Nutrition projects Strong proficiency in data management and analysis tools, including MS Excel and statistical software such as SPSS, STATA, or ODK Fluency in English, Hausa, and Kanuri (written and spoken) Strong communication, coordination, and report-writing skills Ability to work effectively with diverse teams, government institutions, and development partners Demonstrated adaptability, independence, and flexibility in dynamic and high-pressure environments Organisational Commitment Action Against Hunger promotes a work culture grounded in diversity, equity, and inclusion.
