Location: Global (preferably Johannesburg, Nairobi, or London)Contract: PermanentGrade & Salary: Grade F, £79,842Reports to: Director of People, Finance, and OperationsDirect Reports: Business Applications ArchitectMatrix Reports: 2 x Shared Service Technical Leads (Nairobi & Kathmandu)Travel Requirement: ~10% Role Overview The Head of Technology leads ActionAid International’s global technology direction, operations, and cyber security. As a member of the GS International Leadership Team, this role drives digital transformation, oversees platform and infrastructure delivery, ensures robust IT security, and aligns technology strategy with organizational growth and impact objectives. Key objectives include: Driving digital transformation and modernization initiatives (cloud, automation, AI adoption). Ensuring IT operations, cyber security, and compliance (GDPR, ISO 27001). Providing strategic leadership across the GS and federation technology teams. Managing technology budgets, vendors, and resources to maximize ROI. Key Responsibilities 1. Strategic Impact & Leadership Develop and execute the IT roadmap aligned with organizational strategy. Lead modernization, automation, and emerging technology adoption. Implement frameworks for risk management and crisis resolution. 2. Operations & Infrastructure Oversee design, maintenance, and availability of cloud applications and servers. Manage GS helpdesk for resolving system and application issues. 3. Cybersecurity & Compliance Maintain security policies, standards, and procedures. Ensure compliance with industry standards, including GDPR and ISO 27001. Oversee business continuity and disaster recovery planning. 4. Communications, Influence & Coordination Act as subject matter expert for leadership, federation, and board. Translate technical requirements into actionable business outcomes. Collaborate with federation IT Leads on integration and initiatives. 5. People & Team Management Lead distributed IT teams and foster collaboration and innovation. Promote continuous improvement and hybrid work management. 6. Vendor & Budget Management Manage technology budget and optimize resource allocation. Oversee vendor and third-party service provider performance. 7. Continuous Learning & Sustainability Stay updated with emerging technologies (AI/ML, automation). Promote low-carbon IT delivery and green tech practices. Person Specification Education & Qualifications: Degree in Computer Science, IT, or Business Management (or equivalent experience). Desirable certifications: ITIL, PMP, CISSP, CISM. Essential Experience: 8–12 years in technology roles; at least 5 years in leadership or managerial roles. Experience managing diverse and distributed teams globally is a plus. Knowledge & Skills: Strong expertise in software architecture, cloud services, cybersecurity frameworks. Leadership, strategic thinking, and decision-making skills. Excellent stakeholder management and negotiation skills. Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences. Strong problem-solving, analytical, and budget management skills. Languages: English (required). Spanish or French desirable. People Management Responsibility Mentoring, coaching, and coordinating teams (team leaders and matrix-managed personnel). Directs multiple teams via matrix reporting structure.
