The African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP) is inviting applications for the position of Research and Policy Associate – Evidence Uptake. This role offers an opportunity for an experienced qualitative researcher to contribute to improving how evidence informs policy and practice across African contexts. Role Overview: Research and Policy Associate – Evidence Uptake The Research and Policy Associate will play a central role in coordinating and delivering an evidence uptake project. The position is well suited to a professional with strong qualitative research expertise who is motivated to see research translated into real-world policy impact. Working closely with AFIDEP’s research and policy teams, the successful candidate will contribute to the generation, synthesis, and dissemination of evidence, while also supporting engagement with policymakers and other key stakeholders. Key Duties and Responsibilities The Research and Policy Associate will be responsible for a combination of research, coordination, and engagement activities, including: Coordinating the planning and implementation of the evidence uptake project Conducting primary qualitative data collection, secondary data collation, and data analysis Writing and contributing to research reports, policy briefs, and research briefs Supporting the preparation of scientific journal articles Engaging government officials and other stakeholders to facilitate the use of evidence in policy decision-making Planning and organising policy dialogues, workshops, and stakeholder meetings Supporting the dissemination of research outputs to diverse audiences Contributing to progress and final project reports This role combines hands-on research with active policy engagement, offering exposure to both analytical and applied aspects of development policy work. Qualifications and Experience Required AFIDEP is seeking candidates with strong academic and practical experience in qualitative research and policy-oriented work. Essential qualifications and experience include: A Master’s degree in the social sciences or humanities, such as sociology, anthropology, education, psychology, public health, health sciences, or international development At least three years of qualitative research experience, with demonstrated ability to conduct rigorous, high-quality small-N studies Experience in project planning and management Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex ideas clearly to varied audiences Evidence of scientific writing and publications Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team Proven experience using relevant research software and analytical tools Fluency in English, with French proficiency considered an asset Desirable experience includes: Conducting policy-relevant research Engaging government and other key stakeholders Organising policy dialogues and evidence-to-policy forums Producing non-academic outputs, such as policy briefs and public-facing articles Why Join AFIDEP?
