The African Technology Forum has announced the launch of the ATF AI Challenge, a large-scale, fully funded artificial intelligence training and innovation program aimed at developing the next generation of African tech leaders. The initiative is designed to equip thousands of young people with practical AI skills while supporting the development of solutions to pressing challenges across the continent. Positioned as one of Africa’s largest hands-on artificial intelligence learning programs, the ATF AI Challenge focuses on transforming participants from technology consumers into active creators of AI-driven solutions. The program targets up to 15,000 young innovators across Africa, with a strong emphasis on practical skills, collaboration, and real-world problem-solving. Building Africa’s AI innovation pipeline The initiative is structured around a three-phase innovation pathway that guides participants from foundational learning to product development and public showcase. The program begins with an AI School, followed by a competitive challenge phase, and concludes with regional demo events where top teams present their solutions to investors and industry stakeholders. During the AI School phase, scheduled for June to July 2026, participants will undergo a four-week intensive virtual bootcamp. The curriculum covers foundational artificial intelligence concepts, including AI ethics, Python programming, and prompt engineering. The training is designed to accommodate learners at all levels, including beginners with no prior coding experience. Participants who complete this phase receive an industry-recognized certificate and access to advanced learning resources. From learning to building real-world solutions The second phase, known as the AI Challenge, will run from August 2026 through April 2027. During this stage, participants form teams and apply their skills to develop solutions addressing real-world problems in sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, finance, and education. Selected teams will gain access to mentorship from global technology experts, as well as cloud computing credits to support the development of minimum viable products (MVPs). The program is designed to simulate real startup environments, encouraging participants to refine ideas into scalable, impact-driven innovations. The most promising 1,000 teams will be matched with dedicated mentors who will provide technical guidance and strategic support throughout the development process. This phase emphasizes collaboration, innovation, and practical application of artificial intelligence technologies. Showcasing innovation across Africa The final phase of the program culminates in Demo Day events scheduled for May 2027. Regional showcases will take place in major African cities including Accra, Lagos, Nairobi, and Johannesburg. At these events, selected teams will present their solutions to investors, corporate partners, and potential employers. Outstanding participants will have the opportunity to win cash prizes, secure funding opportunities, and access internship or job pipelines with partner organizations. The Demo Day stage is designed to bridge the gap between innovation and industry adoption, providing participants with exposure to real-world career pathways. Expanding access to digital skills and opportunity The ATF AI Challenge is fully funded, removing financial barriers to participation. The program emphasizes accessibility, requiring only time commitment and motivation from participants. It is open to university students and recent graduates with up to three years of post-graduation experience. Eligibility is limited to applicants based in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa. Participants are expected to commit between five and ten hours per week during the AI School phase. No prior artificial intelligence experience is required for entry-level tracks, making the initiative inclusive for beginners while still offering advanced pathways for more experienced learners. Focus on collaboration and career development Beyond technical training, the program places strong emphasis on collaboration and professional development. Participants join a Pan-African learning network, engaging with peers across multiple countries through digital platforms. The program also integrates career acceleration opportunities, including fast-tracked access to internships and recruitment pipelines with corporate partners. According to program organizers, the initiative is designed to address a critical gap in Africa’s digital economy: the need for skilled AI practitioners who can develop context-specific solutions to local challenges. By combining structured learning with practical innovation challenges, the program aims to foster a new generation of entrepreneurs and technology professionals. Timeline for the 2026–2027 cohort Applications for the ATF AI Challenge opened on March 9, 2026, with a closing deadline of May 31, 2026. The AI School phase is set to begin on June 15, 2026, followed by the challenge phase kickoff in August 2026. The program will conclude with Demo Day finals in May 2027. Strengthening Africa’s AI future The ATF AI Challenge reflects a growing movement across the continent to invest in artificial intelligence education and innovation ecosystems. By providing structured training, mentorship, and funding opportunities, the program aims to strengthen Africa’s capacity to participate in the global AI economy. As interest in artificial intelligence continues to expand globally, initiatives such as this are expected to play a key role in preparing African youth to contribute to and shape the future of technology-driven industries.
