The full-time remote role is designed for an experienced communications professional who will lead editorial content development, storytelling, and strategic communications initiatives supporting global agroecology movements. Communications Specialist Role Overview The Communications Specialist will manage the complete editorial process, from identifying impactful stories to writing, editing, publishing, and promoting communications materials. The role will work closely with the Communications Lead, programme teams, regional partners, and external contributors to develop high-quality communications products that showcase the impact of agroecology initiatives. Key responsibilities include: • Researching, writing, and editing feature stories, blogs, newsletters, reports, briefs, and other strategic communications materials. • Leading editorial development for donor-focused publications and maintaining consistent editorial standards. • Supporting multilingual communications workflows across English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and other languages. • Managing freelance writers, editors, translators, and external communications consultants. • Coordinating publication and distribution strategies to expand the global reach of agroecology narratives. Editorial Content Development and Storytelling Responsibilities The Communications Specialist will develop compelling stories that highlight the experiences and achievements of AEF-supported communities and partners. Responsibilities include: • Managing the organisation’s annual editorial calendar. • Identifying storytelling opportunities linked to global events such as Climate Week and COP meetings. • Conducting interviews with grantees, donors, partners, and stakeholders. • Producing human-interest stories and impact-focused content. • Adapting communication styles for different audiences, including donors, policymakers, media organisations, grassroots movements, and development partners. The specialist will collaborate with monitoring, evaluation, fundraising, learning teams, regional funds, and partners to maintain a consistent pipeline of impactful communications content. Content Production and Publication Responsibilities The successful candidate will create and edit content across multiple communication formats, including: • Annual reports and flagship organisational publications. • Project briefs, brochures, media statements, press releases, and fundraising materials. • Website articles, newsletters, blogs, feature stories, and knowledge products. • Simplified summaries of technical research and reports for wider audiences. • Communications materials for conferences, webinars, workshops, campaigns, and learning events. The role requires the ability to transform complex information into clear, engaging, and accessible content for diverse global audiences. Editorial Quality Assurance and Global Coordination The Communications Specialist will ensure all published materials meet high editorial standards by: • Reviewing and editing communications products before publication. • Maintaining editorial guidelines and workflows. • Ensuring factual accuracy, appropriate attribution, and ethical representation of communities. • Promoting inclusive storytelling approaches that respect grassroots partners and Indigenous communities. The role will also coordinate international editorial workflows involving translators, regional teams, and external contributors to ensure culturally appropriate and timely publication. Required Qualifications and Experience Applicants should demonstrate significant professional experience in communications, journalism, publishing, or editorial roles. Essential qualifications include: • A Master’s degree or equivalent qualification in Communications, Journalism, English, International Development, or a related field. • Five to seven years of professional experience in writing, editing, journalism, publishing, or strategic communications. • Proven experience producing editorial content for international organisations, NGOs, foundations, media organisations, or development institutions. • Experience preparing annual reports and converting technical information into accessible communications materials. • Exceptional writing, editing, proofreading, and storytelling skills. • Ability to adapt tone and messaging for different audiences. • Knowledge of climate change, food systems transformation, agroecology, and related global movements. Language Requirements and Preferred Skills Strong English communication skills are required, while bilingual Spanish and English proficiency is highly desirable. Additional preferred qualifications include: • Knowledge of French or Portuguese. • Experience managing multi-author publications and editorial workflows. • Ability to manage multiple projects while meeting deadlines. • Experience working with philanthropy, international development organisations, or nonprofit institutions. • Strong editorial judgement and ability to work independently.
