Analysis and Monitoring Tools Projects may include tools that: Monitor civic conversations and public discourse Track patterns of hate speech and digital harassment Analyse misinformation and disinformation campaigns Support monitoring of election integrity and civic advocacy Applicants may also build lightweight sentiment analysis tools capable of operating in low-resource environments. Verification and Fact-Checking Solutions Applicants may develop AI-powered verification tools that help organisations: Detect manipulated media and deepfakes Verify online information quickly Identify misleading content related to human rights issues Support fact-checking efforts in local communities These tools should be accessible and usable by smaller organisations operating with limited technical resources. Collaboration and Engagement Tools The programme also supports tools that improve collaboration among activists and civil society organisations. Examples include solutions that: Enable secure communication among human rights defenders Facilitate coordination among youth civic actors Strengthen grassroots mobilisation through digital platforms Security and privacy considerations are particularly important in restrictive environments. Inclusive Access Solutions Applicants may also propose projects that expand access to technology for marginalised groups. This may include tools that: Bridge the digital divide for women and underserved communities Improve accessibility of digital information Support inclusive participation in civic processes Technical Support for Grantees Selected organisations will receive technical mentorship and support from Code for Africa through its innovation labs. Key support structures include: TechLab – guidance on AI development and scalable system design DataLab – data analysis and AI modelling support AI Sandbox – experimentation environment for AI tools Grantees will also receive design and content support from CfA’s in-house teams. Strategic Partnerships The program is delivered through the Digitalise Youth Project, which operates under the Digital Democracy Initiative. Eligibility Criteria To qualify for the grant, applicants must meet the following requirements: Be a registered non-profit or civil society organisation Operate in the Sahel region or neighbouring countries in West or East Africa Have a mandate to defend human rights or digital rights Possess a technology team or plan to hire AI expertise Demonstrate a clear need for AI tools in their work Applicants must also demonstrate commitment to ethical AI principles, including: Data privacy and security Transparency and accountability Fairness and responsible technology use Community engagement and participatory design approaches are also required.
