Since its establishment in 2003, AIMS has evolved into the continent’s largest network of centres of excellence dedicated to advanced training, cutting-edge research, and public engagement in the mathematical sciences. With six centres across Africa, AIMS provides a world-class, interdisciplinary learning environment that equips young African scientists with the skills to tackle pressing challenges such as climate change, pandemics, and food insecurity. To date, AIMS has trained more than 3,500 graduates from 45 African countries, with 35% of them women. Around 70% of these alumni remain in Africa, contributing to transformation in key sectors such as healthcare, education, renewable energy, and digital innovation. AIMS Ghana now invites applications for the position of Academic Director — a leadership role at the forefront of academic innovation and institutional excellence. Position Overview Reporting to the Centre President, the Academic Director will oversee all academic aspects of AIMS Ghana—one of five international AIMS centres dedicated to teaching, research, and outreach in the mathematical sciences. The role entails leading an innovative Master’s-level programme while supporting the professional and intellectual growth of students drawn from across Africa. In close collaboration with the Academic Manager, the Academic Council, and the Centre President, the Academic Director will manage the full academic cycle—from student selection to curriculum delivery, faculty coordination, and research supervision—while ensuring the highest standards of academic excellence and innovation. Key Responsibilities 1. Curriculum Development and Management Lead the design, development, and continuous improvement of academic programmes in collaboration with network-wide peers. Provide academic support to the Centre President and Chief Academic Officer during proposal development and fundraising initiatives. Oversee the selection and coordination of students, lecturers, and tutors, ensuring alignment with AIMS’ mission and standards. Manage the daily academic schedule and operations, ensuring strong interaction between students, faculty, and staff. Implement effective quality assurance measures to uphold AIMS’ reputation for excellence. 2. Research Leadership Coordinate the research essay phase of the Master’s programme. Promote a vibrant research culture among tutors and academic staff. Develop and implement new research and workshop programmes in collaboration with the Centre’s leadership team. 3. Partnerships and Stakeholder Engagement Collaborate with the Centre President to establish and strengthen partnerships with national and international universities. Cultivate long-term, mutually beneficial relationships that enhance academic collaboration and resource sharing. 4. Operations and Institutional Management Contribute to the development of the Centre’s operational plan and budget as part of the senior management team. Uphold AIMS policies, values, and standards, ensuring adherence among staff, students, and visiting academics. Work closely with the operations team to ensure all academic and logistical resources are in place to support programme delivery. Qualifications and Competencies A Doctorate in Mathematical Sciences (Mathematics or related applied fields). At least five years of teaching or research experience, with a record of publications and graduate-level instruction. Minimum of two years of academic management experience in an international context, preferably within African higher education. Candidates with relevant experience but limited management exposure may be considered for an Academic Manager role. A minimum academic rank of Associate Professor is advantageous. Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and mentor a diverse team of academic professionals. Proven record of innovative and entrepreneurial approaches in academic development and institutional growth. Strong commitment to advancing mathematical sciences and research capacity in Africa. Fluency in English is essential; French proficiency is an asset. Proficiency in scientific computational tools (e.g., Python, computer algebra software) and academic editing software (LaTeX). Competence in Microsoft Office and online collaboration tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Dropbox, Skype, Gmail, etc.).
