Location: LondonProgramme: Office of the Secretary GeneralType: Permanent, Full-time (35 hours per week)Salary: £75,705 per annum Overview Amnesty International is seeking a dynamic and strategic leader to serve as Head of the Office of the Secretary General (OSG). This role plays a vital part in ensuring the effective delivery of Amnesty International’s global human rights agenda by providing high-level strategic, operational, and managerial support to the Secretary General (SG) and the Senior Leadership Team (SLT). The position is based in London and requires on-site presence at least twice a week. Role Purpose The Head of the OSG will oversee the coordination of the Secretary General’s priorities, drive the implementation of strategic objectives, and foster collaboration across the International Secretariat (IS) and the broader Amnesty movement. The incumbent will act as a key advisor and facilitator, ensuring that leadership decisions are well-informed, efficiently executed, and aligned with Amnesty International’s mission and global priorities. Key Responsibilities Strategic Coordination: Work closely with the Secretary General to define priorities, objectives, and schedules that align with SLT goals, ensuring coherence across organizational activities. Operational Leadership: Provide strategic and operational support for the SG’s internal and external engagements, ensuring the delivery of high-quality materials and coordination with relevant stakeholders. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Promote organizational alignment by identifying challenges and facilitating solutions between departments and the IS management team. Staff and Budget Management: Lead and manage OSG staff, overseeing task allocation, performance, and development, while ensuring effective financial planning and budget control. Governance and Accountability: Support the SG and SLT in fulfilling accountability commitments through preparation of reports, briefings, and communications to the International Board and other governance bodies. Decision-Making Support: Collaborate with the Deputy Secretary General to manage SLT meetings, oversee the preparation of agendas and reports, and track decisions to ensure timely implementation. Stakeholder Relations: Manage relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, ensuring clear communication, logistical efficiency, and the timely delivery of outputs. Strategic Projects: Partner with the OSG Special Project Researcher/Manager to incubate and accelerate priority initiatives, including cross-secretariat programmes and IS-Amnesty Movement collaborations. Confidentiality: Uphold strict confidentiality in handling sensitive organizational and executive information. Candidate Profile The ideal candidate will be a highly experienced professional with a proven record of leadership within large, complex international organizations. They should demonstrate sound political judgment, strategic insight, and the ability to manage multiple priorities under pressure. Essential qualifications and experience include: Extensive experience supporting or advising senior executives in complex global institutions. Proven ability to manage strategic decision-making processes and coordinate across departments. Demonstrated understanding of international human rights and related global issues. Expertise in at least two of the following areas: knowledge management, planning and monitoring systems, complex project management, or meeting facilitation. Strong communication, analytical, and negotiation skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information for diverse audiences. Demonstrated ability to manage teams effectively, foster professional development, and ensure staff wellbeing. Experience managing budgets, plans, and performance systems. Fluency in English is required; proficiency in French or Spanish is highly desirable. Candidates must also exhibit strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build constructive relationships across diverse teams and cultural contexts.
