The Astra Fellowship is the flagship program of the Constellation Institute, designed to accelerate talent and research in the field of AI safety. As artificial intelligence advances at unprecedented speeds, understanding and mitigating its risks has become critical. Astra connects exceptional individuals with leading mentors, innovative research projects, and a robust professional network to ensure high-impact contributions in AI safety. Applications for the next cohort close on May 3rd at 11:59 PM, Anywhere on Earth. The fellowship is fully funded and spans five months in-person at Constellation’s Berkeley research center. Fellows engage with frontier AI safety projects under the guidance of expert mentors while receiving comprehensive support from Constellation’s research management team. Program Overview Duration: 5 months, in-person at Berkeley research center Funding: Full coverage including stipend, research budget, and visa support Focus Areas: Empirical research and strategy & governance Networking: Access to Constellation’s community with over 300 weekly visitors, seminars, workshops, and conferences Astra aims to place fellows in the highest-impact AI safety roles or help them launch initiatives addressing urgent but neglected challenges. Over 80% of the first cohort are now employed full-time in organizations such as Redwood Research, METR, Anthropic, OpenAI, Google DeepMind, the Center for AI Standards and Innovation, and the UK AI Security Institute. Who the Fellowship Seeks The fellowship seeks individuals motivated to reduce catastrophic risks from advanced AI. Ideal candidates: Are driven to contribute to AI safety at a strategic or technical level Possess relevant technical or domain-specific experience Are open to transitioning into full-time AI safety roles or founding organizations focused on AI safety Prior AI safety experience is not required. Many fellows have entered from adjacent fields and rapidly made meaningful contributions. Candidates uncertain about meeting every qualification are still encouraged to apply. Mentorship and Guidance Fellows receive guidance from a team of experienced mentors in both empirical research and strategy & governance. Mentors include: Joe Benton – Anthropic Aryan Bhatt – Redwood Research Owain Evans – Truthful AI Neev Parikh – METR Buck Shlegeris – Redwood Research Jake Mendel – Coefficient Giving Jasmine Wang – OpenAI Tomek Korbak – OpenAI Max Nadeau – Coefficient Giving Mentorship involves weekly 1:1 sessions, small group discussions, office hours, and collaborative Slack channels, ensuring fellows receive structured support throughout the program. Fellowship Benefits Astra provides comprehensive resources to support fellows’ full-time research: Stipend: $8,400 per month for the program duration Research Budget: Approximately $15,000 per empirical research fellow per month for compute and project costs Visa Support: Guidance for international fellows navigating the visa process Additional benefits include: Workspace & Community: Access to Constellation’s Berkeley center with frequent AI safety convenings, shared meals, and workshops Mentorship & Research Management: Dedicated guidance from senior experts and Constellation’s research team Placement Services: Connections to participating organizations and high-impact career opportunities Incubation Services: Advisory support for fellows launching new initiatives, including operations, communications, hiring, and fundraising Impact and Career Pathways Astra has proven highly effective in accelerating careers in AI safety.
