The program seeks to cultivate a network of early-career African researchers who are shaping the continent’s economic future through innovative, evidence-based research. About the YLR Grant The Young Leaders in Research (YLR) Grant is a 12-month initiative designed to empower emerging African economists and social scientists to conduct high-impact, policy-relevant research. Managed by the African Center for Economic Transformation (ACET), the program provides funding, mentorship, and professional development to help young researchers build expertise, influence policy discussions, and contribute to Africa’s sustainable growth agenda. Purpose of the GrantThe YLR Grant supports research that advances Africa’s transformation through applied, context-specific insights. It focuses on nurturing a new generation of thought leaders who combine academic rigor with a strong understanding of the continent’s development priorities. What the Grant Offers The YLR program provides a comprehensive package of support to ensure that recipients can focus on producing research that informs real policy impact. 1. Research Grants Up to USD 15,000 for research activities, data collection, travel, and living expenses. 2. Mentorship Personalized mentorship through one-on-one pairing with experienced African economists and policy advisors, ensuring tailored guidance throughout the research process. 3. Skill Building and Peer Learning Access to a vibrant peer-learning community, enabling participants to share knowledge, exchange feedback, and build professional networks across Africa. 4. Visibility and Publication Opportunities to present findings at ACET-hosted events. Potential to publish research in the ACET Young Leaders in Research series, amplifying visibility among policymakers and development stakeholders. Eligibility Criteria The YLR Grant is open to emerging researchers who demonstrate strong academic potential, leadership qualities, and a commitment to advancing Africa’s development. Applicants must meet the following criteria: Nationality: Preference for African nationals or permanent residents of African countries. Age: 35 years or younger at the time of application. Education: Must have completed or be currently enrolled in a master’s degree or higher, preferably in economics or a related field. Experience: Demonstrated engagement with research through academic work, internships, volunteer projects, or community-based initiatives. Leadership: Proven commitment to driving positive change within African societies. Research Themes for 2026 YLR 2026 will focus on key areas that align with Africa’s development and economic transformation priorities. Research proposals should fall within one or more of the following themes: Gender Equality: Advancing inclusive growth through gender-responsive policy and research. Regional Integration: Exploring strategies for deepening trade, mobility, and cooperation across African nations. Innovation and Digital Policy: Investigating how technology and digital transformation can accelerate economic growth and job creation. Green Industrial Transformation: Promoting sustainable industrialization and environmental resilience. Alignment with the Growth with DEPTH Framework The YLR Grant operates within ACET’s Growth with DEPTH framework, which emphasizes five interconnected pillars that drive Africa’s economic transformation: Diversification: Broadening the range of productive sectors to reduce dependence on a narrow set of exports. Export Competitiveness: Strengthening Africa’s position in global trade through innovation and efficiency. Productivity: Enhancing productivity at all levels of the economy to sustain inclusive growth. Technology: Leveraging digital innovation to foster competitiveness and job creation. Human Well-Being: Ensuring that growth translates into improved living standards and equitable opportunities. Through this alignment, YLR ensures that participants’ research contributes directly to evidence-based, actionable solutions that support Africa’s long-term transformation. Application Process Applications are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis until the final deadline of November 21, 2025. Early submission is encouraged to ensure timely review and feedback. Required Documents: Concept Note: Up to 800 words describing the proposed research topic, objectives, and methodology. Statement of Purpose: Up to 500 words outlining the applicant’s motivation, career goals, and how the YLR Grant will support their professional development. Curriculum Vitae (CV): Highlighting academic achievements, relevant experience, and research background.
