The Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation (CERI) at Stellenbosch University, South Africa, and the Center for Africa’s Resilience to Epidemics (CARE) at the Institut Pasteur de Dakar (IPD), Senegal, are pleased to announce that applications are now open for the African STARS Fellowship Programme. Supported by the Mastercard Foundation, this prestigious initiative is designed to develop the next generation of African leaders in genomics, diagnostics, vaccine development, and biotechnology innovation. The African STARS Fellowship Programme responds to Africa’s growing need for highly skilled scientific leaders who can strengthen epidemic preparedness, advance public health innovation, and translate research into real-world impact across the continent. Programme Overview Africa is home to the world’s fastest-growing young population, with a workforce projected to exceed one billion people in the coming decades. At the same time, the continent continues to face a disproportionate burden of infectious disease outbreaks. These challenges underscore the urgent need for a well-trained, resilient workforce equipped with advanced technical expertise and leadership capabilities. The African STARS Fellowship Programme aims to address this need by investing in talented African scientists and innovators. Fellows receive advanced technical training, leadership development, and hands-on exposure to cutting-edge research and innovation environments. The programme is designed to strengthen Africa’s capacity in critical areas of epidemic preparedness while supporting fellows’ long-term career development. Fellowship Tracks The African STARS Fellowship Programme offers two distinct tracks tailored to different career stages and professional goals. Advanced and Translational Training (ATT) Fellowship – 4 Months This track focuses on intensive, specialised technical training and is designed for early-career scientists and professionals. Key features include: Advanced genomics training for public health applications Genomic diagnostic design and/or vaccine manufacturing exposure Leadership development in: Grant writing and financial management Team leadership and management Strategic decision-making Young Professional Programme (YPP) Fellowship – 12 Months The YPP track focuses on innovation, entrepreneurship, and industry engagement, supporting fellows to bridge the gap between research and commercial application. Key features include: Training in biotechnology innovation and entrepreneurship Placement opportunities at: Commercial companies Biotechnology firms Innovation hubs and industry partners Skills development in: Critical thinking and problem-solving Scientific writing and grantsmanship Effective communication Project and innovation management Eligibility Criteria Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements: Born in and/or currently living in Africa Aged 35 years or younger Hold a relevant postgraduate qualification: Minimum of a Master’s degree PhD is an advantage Track-specific requirements: ATT Track: Minimum of 3 years’ experience in research, innovation, or industry YPP Track: Minimum of 5 years’ experience in research management, innovation, or commercialisation Prior experience in biotechnology startups, innovation hubs, or translational research is an advantage Additional criteria include: Demonstrated excellence in genomics, diagnostics, biotechnology, or vaccine development Strong leadership potential and a commitment to advancing scientific capacity in Africa Willingness to remain in Africa to contribute to local scientific, business, and public health initiatives Fluency in English or French (proficiency in both is an advantage) Women are strongly encouraged to apply.
