International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development is organising an intensive in-person journalist training programme focused on climate change and migration narratives in the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region. Scheduled from 1–3 July 2026, the programme is designed to strengthen evidence-based reporting and storytelling around climate mobility, displacement, resilience, and environmental transformation across South Asia. The training responds to the growing need for nuanced journalism that accurately reflects the complex relationship between climate change and human migration. As climate impacts continue to reshape livelihoods, food systems, water access, and economic stability, journalists play a critical role in shaping public understanding and policy discourse. Programme Overview The training will equip journalists with practical skills and analytical tools to report on climate migration in ethical, inclusive, and scientifically grounded ways. Participants will engage with leading experts, researchers, and media professionals while exploring how climate impacts influence migration patterns, adaptation strategies, and social vulnerabilities. The programme aims to challenge oversimplified and crisis-driven narratives by encouraging human-centred reporting that reflects lived realities and local perspectives. Through collaborative workshops, newsroom simulations, and storytelling labs, participants will develop compelling stories capable of informing public debate and influencing policy conversations. Key Learning Areas Participants will gain expertise in: Climate science interpretation and environmental reporting Migration narratives and human mobility analysis Ethical storytelling and rights-based journalism Data interpretation and evidence-based reporting Visual storytelling and multimedia framing Intersectionality in climate migration coverage Investigative approaches to climate-linked displacement Narrative development grounded in local realities The programme also emphasises responsible reporting practices that avoid fear-based framing while amplifying resilience, adaptation, and community agency. Course Objectives The training seeks to build a stronger network of climate journalists across the HKH region capable of producing balanced, accurate, and impactful reporting. Core objectives include: Strengthening journalists’ understanding of climate-related migration Promoting ethical and inclusive storytelling approaches Encouraging critical engagement with dominant migration narratives Improving journalists’ ability to work with scientific and migration data Enhancing reporting techniques for climate adaptation and resilience stories Supporting the production of accessible and evidence-driven journalism The initiative also aims to cultivate a long-term community of practice among journalists covering climate mobility issues across South Asia. Agenda Highlights The three-day programme combines lectures, collaborative discussions, simulations, and practical exercises. Day 1: Climate Change, Migration, and Media Narratives Topics include: Climate-induced migration trends and regional mobility patterns Key migration and climate terminology Myths and misconceptions in climate reporting Rural-to-urban migration and adaptation pathways Peer exchanges with journalists from across the HKH region Day 2: Data and Storytelling Participants will explore: Climate and migration data analysis Visual storytelling and media framing Intersectional approaches to reporting Reporting beyond crisis narratives Insights from the SUCCESS climate adaptation project Day 3: Editorial Practice and Story Development Sessions focus on: Media analysis of regional climate migration coverage Newsroom simulations and editorial exercises Ethical considerations in visual reporting Story pitching and collaborative writing workshops Developing evidence-based and nuanced climate stories Expected Outcomes Upon completion of the training, participants are expected to: Strengthen ethical and analytical reporting skills Develop stronger storytelling techniques for climate migration coverage Build professional networks with regional journalists and experts Contribute to a growing climate journalism community in South Asia Produce at least one published or broadcast story by December 2026 Stories may be published in English or local languages across print, digital, radio, television, or multimedia platforms. Eligibility Criteria The programme is open to early and mid-career freelance and staff journalists from: Bangladesh Bhutan India Myanmar Nepal Pakistan Applicants should demonstrate: Minimum 2–4 years of journalism experience Experience reporting on environmental or climate issues Strong motivation to specialise in climate migration reporting Basic photography, video production, or editing skills Availability for the full training duration Women journalists and candidates from marginalised communities are strongly encouraged to apply. Participation Support Selected participants will receive full financial support from International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, including: International airfare Visa processing costs Accommodation Meals during the workshop Local transportation The programme is funded through the SUCCESS project under the Climate Adaptation and Resilience initiative supported by UK aid and the International Development Research Centre.
