2026 ENERGY TRANSITION ACADEMY FOR LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN – Free Online Programme Applications are open for the 2026 Energy Transition Academy for Latin America and the Caribbean (ATE LAC), a free, fully online regional programme designed to strengthen the technical, economic, political and social knowledge needed to understand and participate in the energy transition. From 15 October to 26 November 2026, participants will join seven online sessions featuring 12 thematic classes and a high-level closing panel, with experts addressing the most important challenges shaping the region’s energy future. No previous experience in energy is required, and participants who meet the programme requirements can obtain certification issued by the University of Chile. About the Academy The Energy Transition Academy for Latin America and the Caribbean (ATE LAC) 2026 is a regional training programme created to help more people understand how energy systems work, why the energy transition matters, and how they can participate in building a more sustainable, resilient and just energy future for the region. Latin America and the Caribbean are entering a decisive phase of the energy transition. Countries across the region must translate climate and energy commitments into policies, infrastructure, investment, regulation and projects that reduce emissions while strengthening energy security, expanding access and responding to the realities of each territory. At the same time, the transition is creating new technological, economic and social opportunities that require people with the knowledge and skills to understand complex energy choices and take part in their implementation. ATE LAC responds to this need through an interdisciplinary learning experience that brings together the technical, economic, political and social dimensions of the energy transition. The programme is designed for young people, students, early-career professionals, civil society members, professionals from different sectors and anyone who wants to better understand the transformation of energy systems in Latin America and the Caribbean. You do not need to be an energy specialist to apply. The Academy is built to make the sector more accessible while also providing enough depth for participants who already have experience in climate, sustainability, public policy, engineering, economics, development, business, communications or related areas. Eligibility The Academy is open to people from different educational and professional backgrounds. Applicants should meet the following general conditions: Be at least 18 years old. There is no maximum age limit. No specific nationality is required; the programme is designed with a strong focus on Latin America and the Caribbean. No previous academic or professional experience in the energy sector is required. Be able to follow the programme in Spanish, English or Portuguese. Academic sessions are delivered in Spanish, with simultaneous language access in English and Portuguese. Have reliable internet access to participate in online sessions and complete the required activities. Youth participation is a central priority of ATE LAC: 85% of the programme’s places are intended for people between 18 and 35 years old, while the remaining 15% are available without an upper age limit. Programme Structure and Format The academic programme runs for seven weeks and includes seven online sessions. Each session lasts approximately 120 minutes. Global and regional energy context; Energy generation, renewable energy and nuclear energy in the region. Session 2 – 22 October: Transmission and distribution: inertia and flexibility challenges; Electrification and energy efficiency: demand as a lever for the transition. Session 3 – 29 October: Transport sector: electromobility and alternative fuels; Industrial decarbonisation: heat, industrial processes and hard-to-abate sectors. Session 4 – 5 November: Artificial intelligence, digitalisation and cybersecurity; Strategic minerals for the energy transition. Session 5 – 12 November: Just energy transition: communities and energy poverty; Energy economics: investment, subsidies and financial instruments. Session 6 – 19 November: Climate and energy policy in Latin America and the Caribbean; Productive diversification and regional energy integration. Session 7 – 26 November: High-level closing panel: 2050 scenarios – What Latin America do we want, and how can we start building it today? Dates and Weekly Schedule Academic sessions take place every Thursday from 15 October to 26 November 2026. The standard session time is: 07:00–09:00 (UTC-6) 08:00–10:00 (UTC-5) 09:00–11:00 (UTC-4) 10:00–12:00 (UTC-3 / Chile time during the programme) Participants should verify their local time, as daylight-saving changes may affect some countries during the programme period. Participation Categories ATE LAC provides two ways to participate, allowing the programme to reach a broad regional audience while offering a more intensive track for a selected group. 1. Participant Track – 200 places Applicants go through an application and selection process. Participants join the interactive live sessions and have access to the programme’s learning platform. They take part in group-work meetings and develop a final collaborative project related to the energy transition in Latin America and the Caribbean. They may contribute as co-authors to the collective document that compiles the final student work. To qualify for the corresponding certificate, participants must meet the attendance and final assessment requirements described below. 2. Listener Track – 3,300 places Auditors complete a registration process and can follow all academic classes online. They have access to the learning platform and programme materials. They do not take part in the participant-track group project. Auditors who meet the required attendance and final assessment conditions can obtain the corresponding attendance certificate. Certification Requirements Certification is linked to active participation and completion of the programme requirements. Participant Track At least 80% attendance at academic classes. At least 80% attendance at group-work meetings. Completion of the final Academy test with at least 80% approval. How transport and industrial sectors can reduce emissions through electrification, alternative fuels and process transformation. How digitalisation and artificial intelligence are changing energy systems, including cybersecurity risks for critical infrastructure. The strategic role of minerals and value chains in the transition, including governance, circularity and socio-environmental considerations. Why a just transition must address communities, employment, territorial equity and energy poverty. How investment, subsidies, capital costs and financial instruments influence energy projects in the region. How public policy, regulation, long-term planning and regional integration shape the pace and direction of energy transformation.
