This prestigious program addresses a long-standing challenge for scientists and technologists who aspire to work in India but are often constrained by uncertainty and limited initial support. With a grant of USD 300,000 (approximately ₹2.5 Crores) over three years, the fellowship offers the scale, flexibility, and institutional backing required to enable high-impact, translational research in biomedical science, healthcare, and public health innovation. It is designed to attract top global talent into leadership roles at India’s premier research institutions, fostering cross-border collaboration and scientific excellence. It supports individuals with the ability to establish “impact engines” — research-led initiatives with measurable outcomes in science, technology, and public health. The fellowship is open to Indian-origin and international experts across sectors who are ready to relocate to India for a minimum of three years and work full-time within an FCRA-approved or exempted Indian host institution. Fellowship Grant and Funding Structure Total Grant: USD 300,000 (approx. ₹2.5 Crores) per fellow over three yearsDisbursement Mode: Three tranches of USD 100,000 each, transferred directly to the host institution in India Use of Funds: Fellow’s salary and associated benefits Research and laboratory expenses Salaries for project staff and research assistants Equipment procurement and consumables Travel and fieldwork related to project implementation Institutional overheads and other approved project costs Funding Conditions: Grants are disbursed only to FCRA-approved or exempted host institutions. The host institution must create a dedicated project account to manage fellowship funds. Disbursement of each tranche is linked to progress reviews, reporting, and compliance. Funding Process and Accountability Year 1 – First Tranche (USD 100,000):Released after the fellowship award is approved and documentation between the fellowship secretariat and host institution is completed. Year 2 – Second Tranche (USD 100,000):Disbursed upon submission of the following: Annual Progress Report reviewed and endorsed by the host institution. Financial Utilization Certificate (UC) certified by the host institution’s finance office. Mid-Term Review by an expert panel convened by BFI, assessing milestones such as scientific progress, publications, prototypes, or field validations. Updated project plan and revised budget for the final year. Year 3 – Final Tranche (USD 100,000):Released after a satisfactory second-year review and focused on scale-up activities, such as clinical validation, product rollout, or public health implementation. Completion Requirements:At the end of three years, both the fellow and host institution must submit a comprehensive final report summarizing outcomes, deliverables, and impact achieved during the fellowship period. Nomination and Application Process The India Reimagined Fellowship operates exclusively through institutional nominations. Individual self-applications will not be considered. Each participating Indian institution may nominate only one candidate, and a maximum of three fellowships will be awarded globally in this cycle. Step 1: Identify a Suitable Candidate The host institution identifies a researcher, entrepreneur, clinician, or innovator based outside India who has: A proven record of scientific or professional excellence. A willingness to relocate to India for at least three years. A commitment to executing a high-impact research or innovation project. Step 2: Institutional Commitment The nominating institution must: Provide necessary infrastructure and administrative support for the fellow’s work. Act as custodian of fellowship funds, ensuring full financial accountability and compliance. Submit Utilization Certificates (UCs), audits, and progress reports on schedule. Ensure regulatory approvals (e.g., Health Ministry Screening Committee (HMSC) clearance, where applicable). Step 3: Application Submission Nominations must be emailed to india.reimagined@blockchainforimpact.nl in the prescribed format. The submission must include: Formal nomination letter signed by the institutional authority. Nominee’s CV with details of qualifications, publications, and achievements. Two or more recommendation letters from referees. Summary of significant research contributions. Research or innovation proposal (maximum 10 pages) outlining objectives, methods, impact, and scalability. Details of institutional commitment if the nominee is selected. Incomplete or self-submitted applications will not be reviewed. Review and Selection Selection follows a transparent and merit-based process conducted on a rolling basis: Eligibility Screening – Verification of institutional and nominee qualifications. Expert Review – Evaluation of research proposal, feasibility, and impact potential. Panel Interview – Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interaction with the selection panel. Final Selection – Determined by the BFI Advisory Board. Review Timeline: Approximately 12 weeks after submission.Disbursement of First Tranche: Within 6 weeks of acceptance and MoU signing with the host institution. Early submission is strongly encouraged, as only three fellowship awards will be made in this cycle. Responsibilities Fellow: Develop and execute the proposed research project at the host institution. Relocate to India for the full fellowship term. Submit annual progress and financial reports. Host Institution: Nominate and support the fellow. Manage project funds and ensure compliance with financial and regulatory requirements. Submit certified Utilization Certificates and audit reports. Provide institutional oversight and maintain communication with the fellowship secretariat.
