The Daimler and Benz Foundation is pleased to announce a new call for applications aimed at promoting sustainable, equitable, and high-impact research collaborations between German research institutions and their counterparts in Africa. This initiative supports the Foundation’s long-standing commitment to fostering international scientific cooperation and capacity-building through partnerships that address global challenges and create lasting academic ties. Purpose of the Funding Program The funding is designed to strengthen research partnerships between institutions in Germany and Africa, encouraging the co-creation of knowledge, the exchange of expertise, and the mutual development of innovative research projects. This initiative particularly emphasizes empowering African partner institutions, ensuring they are principal beneficiaries and equal collaborators in both the research process and outcomes. Funding Overview Funding Duration: Up to 3 years Total Available Funding: Up to €300,000 per project Primary Beneficiaries: African partner institutions Eligible Applicants: Research institutions based in Germany that: Have existing partnerships with African institutions or Seek to establish new collaborations with African research entities Key Funding Goals The funding aims to: Facilitate joint research initiatives addressing globally relevant scientific or societal issues Build and enhance research capacity in African partner institutions Promote equal, long-term partnerships between German and African researchers Encourage co-publication, co-supervision of graduate students, and shared leadership in research activities Support knowledge exchange through joint workshops, academic exchanges, and fieldwork Eligibility Criteria To qualify for funding: The lead applicant must be a recognized research institution based in Germany The project must involve one or more African research institutions as formal partners African institutions should play an active role in project development, implementation, and dissemination of results The proposal should clearly outline how the African partners will benefit, both in terms of funding and long-term capacity development Application Process All applications must be submitted through the Daimler and Benz Foundation’s online application portal. Application Deadline: December 15, 2025, at 11:59 PM CET Submission Method: Online only (no email or postal submissions accepted) Required Materials: Detailed project proposal (including objectives, methodology, roles, and timeline) Budget plan outlining how funds will be allocated, with emphasis on African partner support CVs of key personnel from both German and African institutions Letters of support from all partner institutions Evidence of existing collaborations (if applicable) Review and Selection Applications will be evaluated by a multidisciplinary panel of experts based on the following criteria: Scientific merit and originality of the proposed project Potential for long-term collaboration and institutional strengthening Clear benefits and equitable involvement of African research partners Feasibility of implementation within the proposed timeline and budget Shortlisted applicants may be contacted for additional information or interviews.
