The UN Women Advocacy, Outreach and Resource Mobilization Internship in Tokyo offers a six-month, full-time opportunity for students and recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in gender equality advocacy and communications. Based at the UN Women Japan Liaison Office (JLO) in Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, this internship supports strategic outreach, partnerships, and awareness-raising initiatives across Japan. About UN Women Japan Liaison Office Established in 2015, the Japan Liaison Office strengthens policy dialogue and builds partnerships with government institutions, parliamentarians, private sector actors, academia, civil society, and media organizations. The office plays a key role in promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment initiatives in Japan, aligned with UN Women’s global mandate. Internship Overview Under the supervision of the Communications and Advocacy Consultant, the intern will support communications, advocacy campaigns, and resource mobilization efforts. This position is ideal for candidates pursuing studies in gender studies, communications, human rights, international development, or related fields who are seeking practical experience in multilateral cooperation. Key Responsibilities Communications & Digital Outreach Support social media engagement and website management Develop visibility materials such as flyers, posters, videos, and presentations Assist with drafting speeches and presentations for senior leadership Advocacy & Partnerships Support outreach to government, private sector, and academic stakeholders Assist with partnership-building and research for resource mobilization Help coordinate advocacy initiatives and stakeholder engagement activities Unstereotype Alliance & Women’s Empowerment Principles Support awareness-raising activities for the Unstereotype Alliance (UA) Japan National Chapter Assist with workshops and advocacy initiatives related to the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) Prepare materials for meetings and corporate engagement activities The internship provides exposure to strategic communications, policy dialogue, and gender-focused corporate engagement initiatives. Learning Objectives The internship is designed to: Provide direct exposure to UN Women’s global and national-level work Strengthen understanding of gender equality frameworks Develop professional experience in advocacy, communications, and stakeholder engagement Enhance practical skills in multilateral and international cooperation settings This role bridges academic study with real-world experience in gender-focused development and communications. Required Qualifications Education Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: Enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (Master’s or higher) Enrolled in the final year of a Bachelor’s programme Recently graduated (within two years) Participating in a mandatory national service programme that includes an internship Fields of study should include gender studies, communications, development, human rights, or related disciplines. Language Requirements Fluency in English (written and oral) is required Excellent Japanese communication skills are highly desirable Knowledge of another UN language is an asset Desired Skills and Competencies Successful candidates should demonstrate: Awareness and sensitivity to gender issues Strong written and verbal communication skills Ability to plan and organize events Translation skills between English and Japanese Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) Knowledge of social media tools and web design (an advantage) Ability to work in multicultural teams and under pressure Stipend and Conditions Interns not receiving financial support from other institutions may receive a stipend from UN Women to partially cover basic living costs during the internship.
