The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is offering a three-month internship within its Global Programme Division (GPD), based in the Director’s Office at its New York headquarters. The position may be undertaken either onsite or remotely, depending on eligibility and time zone alignment. This internship is part of UNICEF’s broader mission to advance child rights globally by strengthening programme excellence, strategic communication, and knowledge-sharing across its global operations. Organisational Context UNICEF works across more than 190 countries and territories, focusing on the protection, survival, and development of children, particularly those in the most disadvantaged and vulnerable communities. Within UNICEF’s structure, the Global Programme Division provides strategic leadership for programme design, standards development, and evidence-based policy solutions. It ensures that global frameworks are effectively linked with field-level implementation. Supporting this structure are Centres of Excellence located in Nairobi, Panama, Amman, and Bangkok. These centres provide technical assistance in areas such as policy reform, public finance, and programme strengthening, ensuring that global strategies are informed by real-world implementation experience. The internship sits within the Director’s Office and contributes to strengthening internal knowledge systems and external engagement strategies. Purpose of the Internship The internship focuses on two core areas: Programme Thought Leadership and knowledge management Strategic internal and external communication The role is designed to support the development of structured platforms for knowledge sharing while enhancing UNICEF’s visibility and influence in global policy discussions. Key Responsibilities The intern will contribute to both analytical and communications-focused workstreams. Programme Thought Leadership and Knowledge Management The intern will support the development of structured knowledge products, including: Journal / Field Notes Series Supporting the design and launch of field-based knowledge documentation Capturing operational insights and lessons learned from programme work Staff Working Paper Series Assisting with formatting, coordination, and editorial review processes Supporting the development of internal analytical publications Internal Engagement Initiatives Contributing to staff engagement activities such as learning forums or book clubs Supporting knowledge-sharing and internal dialogue across teams The intern will also contribute to project coordination efforts, helping transition initiatives from pilot stages into structured institutional processes. Strategic Communication and Engagement The internship also supports UNICEF’s broader communication strategy within the Director’s Office. Responsibilities include: Supporting the Director’s external communication pipeline, including LinkedIn content development Drafting, editing, and refining articles and posts for publication Assisting in the coordination of organizational newsletters Exploring additional communication platforms such as digital messaging and social media tools Supporting the preparation of key messaging, talking points, and briefing materials Contributing to internal communication strategies and staff engagement initiatives Expected Outcomes By the end of the internship, the participant will have contributed to several institutional priorities, including: Supporting the formalisation of thought leadership initiatives Contributing to at least one published or externally disseminated knowledge product Strengthening internal coordination and communication systems Supporting the development of structured engagement pipelines Generating innovative ideas for staff and stakeholder engagement Required Qualifications Applicants must meet the following criteria: Academic Background Currently enrolled in or recently graduated (within the past year) from a graduate or advanced degree programme in fields such as: International Development Political Science Economics Social Sciences Communications Business or related disciplines Skills and Competencies Strong writing and communication skills, with the ability to produce clear and engaging content Strong organisational and project management abilities Analytical thinking and intellectual curiosity Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively Capacity to work independently and collaboratively in multicultural environments Ability to synthesise complex information into structured outputs Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools Familiarity with digital communication or content management platforms (advantageous) Language Requirements Fluency in English (written and spoken) Knowledge of another United Nations language is considered an advantage Desirable Experience Additional experience that may strengthen an application includes: Exposure to strategic communications, consulting, or research roles Interest in global policy, development strategy, or executive communications Experience working in international or multidisciplinary environments Familiarity with digital engagement platforms or social media strategy Modality and Conditions Duration: 3 months (starting June 2026) Work arrangement: Onsite in New York or remote (subject to time zone feasibility) Work schedule: Full-time Leave entitlement: Up to 2.5 days per month Interns may receive a stipend, which may be adjusted based on attendance and leave usage.
