UNSGSA Intern at United Nations Development Programme: Supporting Global Financial Health Advocacy in New York The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is offering a six-month, in-person internship opportunity in New York for a UNSGSA Intern within its Bureau of External Relations and Advocacy (BERA). This role provides a unique chance to work at the intersection of financial inclusion, international development, and high-level global advocacy. The internship supports the Office of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Financial Health (UNSGSA), currently led by Queen Máxima, who champions global efforts to advance financial health and inclusive financial systems. About UNDP and the UNSGSA Office UNDP operates in approximately 170 countries and territories, working to eradicate poverty, reduce inequalities, strengthen governance, build crisis resilience, and promote environmental sustainability. The UNSGSA role, held by Queen Máxima since 2024, focuses on improving financial health worldwide—ensuring individuals and households can manage daily expenses, withstand financial shocks, plan for the future, and build long-term security. The Office works closely with governments, regulators, international financial institutions, private sector leaders, and multilateral partners to advocate for inclusive financial systems that reduce poverty and promote opportunity. The Office collaborates with major global institutions including the World Bank, IMF, IFC, CGAP, AFI, UNCDF, and others, helping translate high-level advocacy into policy reform and real-world impact. Internship Overview The UNSGSA Internship is based at UNDP Headquarters in New York under a hybrid work model (three in-office days per week). Candidates may work full-time (5 days per week) or part-time (2.5–3 days per week). The intern will report directly to the Policy Specialist in the Office of the UNSGSA and contribute to both advocacy initiatives and office operations. Key Responsibilities 1. Advocacy and Policy Support (50%) The intern will: Conduct research and provide analytical support on financial health and financial inclusion Develop case studies highlighting innovative financial products that enhance consumer financial well-being Draft background notes, briefing papers, and policy analyses Support preparations for high-level meetings and country visits Attend relevant UN meetings and track global policy discussions Prepare meeting summaries, correspondence, and stakeholder follow-ups This component offers hands-on exposure to global policy dialogue and international financial sector reform discussions. 2. Office Management and Operational Support (50%) The intern will also: Provide logistical and administrative support for advocacy events Assist with stakeholder outreach to Member States, UN agencies, and development partners Maintain accurate documentation and internal communications Support ad hoc tasks as required The role requires strong organizational skills and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, high-level international environment. Eligibility and Qualifications To qualify, candidates must: Be currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program; or Have graduated from a Master’s degree program within the past year Relevant fields include International Relations, Economics, Finance, Political Science, International Development, or Business Management. Required Skills and Experience Knowledge of financial inclusion, financial health, and international development policy Strong research and analytical abilities (qualitative and quantitative) Excellent drafting and communication skills in English Ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines Professionalism, discretion, and integrity Experience in financial services (banking, fintech, microfinance), economic policy, or working with high-level stakeholders is considered an asset. Knowledge of French or Spanish is also advantageous. Internship Conditions and Benefits While this internship is unpaid, UNDP provides a monthly stipend of USD 1,000 for full-time interns in accordance with UNDP policy. Interns are responsible for: Travel and visa arrangements Accommodation and living expenses Health insurance coverage The internship duration is six months, and interns are not considered UN staff members.
