Applications are now open for the Department of Science and Innovation – National Youth Service (DSTI-NYS) Programme, a flagship youth development initiative designed to support unemployed graduates in South Africa through practical work placements, skills development, and monthly stipends. Application Deadline: Saturday, 31 January 2026 at 23:59 About the DSTI National Youth Service Programme The DSTI National Youth Service (NYS) Programme forms part of the Government of South Africa’s broader National Youth Service Programme, which aims to address youth unemployment while promoting a culture of community service, volunteerism, and active citizenship. The programme is managed by the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA) under the National Research Foundation (NRF). It places eligible unemployed graduates in partner institutions for a period of 12 months, during which participants gain hands-on work experience relevant to their qualifications. In addition to practical exposure, participants receive a monthly stipend to support their basic needs throughout the placement period. Programme Objectives The DSTI-NYS Programme is designed to: Provide unemployed graduates with practical workplace experience Enhance employability and skills development Promote volunteerism and community service Reduce long-term youth unemployment Support South Africa’s science, technology, and innovation ecosystem Enable young people to contribute meaningfully to national development By combining structured placements with skills development, the programme offers participants a pathway into the economy and a stronger understanding of their role in building South Africa’s future. Who Should Apply? The programme primarily targets unemployed graduates under the age of 35, particularly those from science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. However, depending on recruitment needs, limited opportunities may be available for graduates from other fields. Eligible Fields May Include (but are not limited to): Science and Technology Engineering and Innovation-related disciplines Journalism and Media Studies Communications Other relevant fields as determined by the recruitment process Candidate Profile The ideal applicant for the DSTI-NYS Programme should demonstrate the following attributes: A relevant tertiary qualification Computer literacy Strong self-motivation and the ability to work under pressure Excellent communication and organisational skills Good writing skills and/or experience in radio and television Strong analytical, interpersonal, and teamwork skills A willingness to learn, contribute, and serve communities The programme is well-suited for graduates who are eager to gain work experience, develop professional skills, and make a meaningful contribution to society.
