Apply Now: Red Cross Climate Centre Flood Risk and Forecast Analysis Internships in West Africa: Apply by 26 June 2026
globalsouthopportunities.com

Application Deadline

July 15, 2026

Description

The Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre has announced applications for three specialized internship positions aimed at strengthening flood preparedness and anticipatory action efforts in West Africa. The internships, which will be based in Guinea, Togo, and Benin, form part of a collaborative initiative involving the Climate Centre, the French Red Cross, and national Red Cross societies in each participating country. The project seeks to improve flood risk assessment and develop forecast-based triggers that will support the creation and implementation of Flood Early Action Protocols (EAPs). The initiative is designed to help humanitarian organizations better anticipate flood-related disasters and take early action to protect vulnerable communities before emergencies occur. According to the Climate Centre, selected interns will play a key role in conducting technical analyses that contribute to strengthening disaster preparedness systems in their respective countries. The positions are intended for Master’s and PhD students with strong quantitative research backgrounds and an interest in climate resilience, hydrology, forecasting, and disaster risk management. Successful candidates will be responsible for identifying and preparing relevant flood risk and forecasting datasets, designing methodologies to assess flood risks, evaluating forecast performance using technical skill assessment metrics, and contributing to reports that document research findings and recommendations. The internship opportunities are available in three locations: Guinea Internship The Guinea-based internship will support collaboration between the French Red Cross, the Guinean Red Cross Society, and the Climate Centre. The position will be home-based in Conakry, with regular meetings at the Guinean Red Cross headquarters. Togo Internship The Togo internship will contribute to a joint initiative involving the French Red Cross, the Togolese Red Cross Society, and the Climate Centre. The selected intern will work remotely from Lomé while maintaining regular engagement with the Togolese Red Cross. Benin Internship The Benin-based role will support efforts by the French Red Cross Society, the Beninese Red Cross Society, and the Climate Centre to enhance flood preparedness and risk forecasting. The internship will involve close collaboration with national humanitarian stakeholders and technical experts. Applicants for all three positions must remain enrolled in a Master’s or PhD programme throughout the duration of the four-month full-time internship. Preferred academic backgrounds include hydrology, climate science, machine learning, environmental modelling, data science, geography, or related quantitative disciplines. The Climate Centre is particularly seeking candidates with experience in scientific computing, data analysis, modelling, and environmental or geospatial datasets. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or MATLAB is considered highly desirable. The internships provide a unique opportunity for emerging researchers to apply advanced analytical skills to real-world humanitarian challenges. Participants will contribute directly to improving flood early warning systems and strengthening climate resilience efforts in vulnerable communities across West Africa. The project aligns with growing international efforts to expand anticipatory action approaches that use climate and weather forecasts to reduce disaster impacts before they occur. By improving flood forecasting and risk assessment methodologies, the initiative aims to support more effective humanitarian decision-making and community preparedness. Interested candidates are required to submit a CV and cover letter in English to application@climatecentre.org. Applicants should indicate the relevant position in the email subject line by using either “Intern flood EAP – Guinea,” “Intern flood EAP – Togo,” or “Intern flood EAP – Benin.” The application deadline for all three internship opportunities is 26 June 2026 at 22:00 GMT. These internships represent a valuable opportunity for graduate researchers seeking practical experience at the intersection of climate science, disaster risk reduction, humanitarian action, and data-driven decision-making.
