The University of Exeter is inviting applications for a number of fully funded Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Doctoral Landscape Award (EPSRC DLA) studentships for the 2026/27 academic entry cycle. These prestigious studentships are awarded to outstanding applicants across the entire breadth of the EPSRC’s remit, with a particular focus on projects that integrate multiple disciplines and involve collaborations with industrial or societal users. Studentship Funding and Benefits The EPSRC DLA studentship provides comprehensive financial support for eligible candidates, covering the full duration of the PhD, typically up to 3.5 years full-time, or pro-rata for part-time study. The funding package includes: Index-linked Stipend: An annual maintenance allowance (currently set at £20,780 per annum for the 2026/27 rate), which is tax-free. Tuition Fees: Payment of full University tuition fees at the Home rate. Research Training Support Grant (RTSG): A grant of £5,000 provided over the 3.5-year duration to cover costs such as specialist equipment, conference attendance, and travel. The supervisory team for each project will consist of at least two University of Exeter academic staff, with the study location (Devon or Cornwall) determined by the lead supervisor’s base. Eligibility and Entry Requirements To be considered for a fully-funded studentship, applicants must satisfy both the academic and residency criteria. Academic Entry Requirements Candidates should have secured, or be on track to secure, a First or Upper Second Class UK Honours degree, or an equivalent international qualification, in a relevant science or technology area. Applicants with a Lower Second Class degree may be considered if they also possess a relevant Master’s degree or can demonstrate significant, relevant non-academic professional experience. Applicants are strongly advised to check the individual project descriptions, as some may stipulate additional, specific entry requirements. Non-native English speakers must also meet the University’s English language proficiency requirements. Residency Requirements The residency requirements for these studentships are complex and follow the detailed criteria set out by the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) for Doctoral Landscape Awards. The studentship funds the tuition fees at the Home rate. Meeting these residency requirements is essential for being eligible for a fully-funded award. Transcript(s): Detailed records of subjects studied and grades obtained (interim transcripts are acceptable if still studying).
