The Accelerator Fellowship Programme Advancing Ethical AI Through Cross-Sector Collaboration The University of Oxford Institute for Ethics in AI has opened applications for its Accelerator Fellowship Programme, a pioneering initiative designed to tackle the urgent ethical challenges arising from artificial intelligence. Rooted in philosophical inquiry, academic independence, and a collaborative, human-centred approach, the programme supports innovative work that produces real-world impact in AI ethics. The Fellowship provides a platform for individuals who aim to build meaningful bridges between academia and industry, and who seek opportunities for interdisciplinary exchange, professional development, and policy-relevant research. Each project must be guided by one of four core themes central to the Institute’s mission: AI and Creativity AI in Care, Mental Health, and Healthcare AI and Humanity AI, Law and Policy For the upcoming cohort, the programme expects to recruit three to four Fellows, selecting those who demonstrate strong potential to contribute original, impactful work to the field of AI ethics. Eligibility and Intended Audience The Fellowship welcomes applications from individuals across sectors—including academia, industry, civil society, public policy, and the creative and technology industries. It is designed for applicants who seek to expand collaborations, develop new networks, and advance ethical research or practical solutions that address contemporary challenges in AI development and deployment. What the Fellowship Offers Fellows receive a flexible, self-directed research environment supported by: Opportunities for professional development Access to strategic networks and collaborative partners A stipend available to both in-person and remote Fellows Support for practical and policy-based solutions Coverage of visa costs and round-trip economy airfare for those visiting the UK The programme promotes academic independence, allowing Fellows to manage their own time and lead their research direction without formal supervision or assessments. While not a taught programme, Fellows can participate in seminars, talks, and events hosted by the Institute for Ethics in AI and other departments across the University. Structured elements are intentionally minimal but include a kick-off meeting and a one-day retreat, fostering shared dialogue and community among Fellows. Fellowship Format and Expectations Fellows are expected to pursue an independent, impact-driven project aligned with one of the programme’s four thematic areas. The Fellowship does not impose fixed weekly time commitments; instead, participants manage their own schedules and professional responsibilities. Each Fellow will identify deliverables for their project, with outputs discussed early in the programme. Successful candidates may choose to present preliminary ideas during the interview stage. At the completion of the Fellowship, participants are required to submit a short written summary of their work or research outcomes for publication on the Accelerator Fellowship Programme website.
