globalsouthopportunities.com

Application Deadline

May 22, 2026

Description

ARROW–AMwA Advocacy Institute 2026 (AAI): Full Overview The ARROW–AMwA Advocacy Institute 2026 is a regional feminist leadership and advocacy programme jointly run by the Asian-Pacific Resource and Research Centre for Women (ARROW) and Akina Mama wa Afrika (AMwA). It is designed for young feminist leaders (18–35 years) from Africa, Asia, and the Pacific who are actively engaged in human rights, gender equality, and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). Unlike short training workshops, AAI is a two-stage pipeline programme combining capacity-building webinars and a competitive fellowship phase that supports real-world advocacy implementation. 1. Core Purpose and Vision The programme is grounded in Global South feminist movement-building. Its key goals are: Strengthening solidarity across Africa, Asia, and the Pacific Supporting feminist responses to anti-rights and anti-gender movements Building leadership capacity for national and regional advocacy Linking grassroots activism to global policy spaces Advancing SRHR, reproductive justice, climate justice, and digital rights At its core, AAI is not just training—it is designed to produce a cohort of movement leaders who can influence policy, systems, and cultural narratives. 2. Structure of the Programme AAI 2026 has two main components: (A) Capacity Strengthening Webinars (150 participants) Selected participants will join a 7-week online learning programme (29 May–10 July 2026) including: Six structured capacity-building webinars One orientation session Weekly office hours Three regional caucuses This phase focuses on: Feminist advocacy strategies SRHR frameworks Political and economic justice systems Climate justice and digital transformation (including AI) Movement-building skills and cross-regional solidarity (B) South2South Feminist Fellowship (50 participants) From the 150 webinar participants, 50 fellows are selected for deeper engagement. This stage includes: Development of national advocacy plans Technical mentoring and guidance Small fellowship funding support Implementation of real advocacy initiatives in home countries This makes AAI a practical action-oriented fellowship, not just a learning experience. 3. Thematic Focus Areas The programme prioritizes six major global justice areas: Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) Gender equality and bodily autonomy Economic justice and financing human rights Climate justice Digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Political systems, democracy, and anti-rights movements These themes reflect an intersectional approach, linking gender justice with global governance, technology, and climate systems. 4. Eligibility Criteria (Key Requirements) Applicants must: Be female or gender-diverse feminist-identifying individuals Be aged 18–35 years Have at least 2 years of experience in: Human rights Gender equality SRHR advocacy Be affiliated with an organization or movement aligned with progressive feminist values Be a national and resident of an eligible country in Africa, Asia, or the Pacific (e.g., Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Nepal, Philippines, Fiji, etc.) Importantly, experience does not have to be paid, meaning strong community activism counts significantly. 5. Key Strengths of the Programme 1. Strong Global South Feminist Network AAI connects participants across three major regions, enabling cross-cultural feminist solidarity. 2. Policy-Relevant Advocacy Training The focus is not theoretical; participants are trained to engage in: National advocacy campaigns Policy influence Movement strategy design 3. Two-Stage Selection Model Only a portion of participants move from training to fellowship, ensuring: High-quality cohort selection Practical implementation of ideas 4. Inclusion of Emerging Global Issues AAI integrates: AI and digital rights Climate justice Economic systemsThis reflects modern feminist policy priorities. 6. Time Commitment and Format Duration: 7 weeks (webinars) + fellowship phase Mode: Primarily virtual Activities include: Weekly structured sessions Office hours Regional caucuses Language: English (with French interpretation available) Participants are expected to be actively engaged throughout the programme, including advocacy work during the fellowship phase. 7. Strategic Value of AAI This programme is particularly valuable for individuals who want to: Build a regional feminist advocacy profile Transition from grassroots activism to policy influence roles Join a high-level Global South feminist network Gain experience in structured advocacy planning and implementation It sits at the intersection of: Activism Policy advocacy International development Feminist theory and practice 8. Overall Assessment AAI 2026 is best described as a high-impact feminist leadership incubator. It is not entry-level; it requires prior engagement in activism and a clear commitment to gender justice work. Its strongest contribution is its ability to transform local activists into regional feminist policy actors, while also building long-term South–South solidarity networks.
