globalsouthopportunities.com

Application Deadline

August 5, 2026

Description

The Global Brain Health Institute (GBHI) has officially opened applications for the 2027–2028 Atlantic Fellows for Equity in Brain Health program, offering experienced professionals worldwide an opportunity to join an international network committed to advancing brain health equity and reducing the global burden of dementia. Hosted through Trinity College Dublin and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), the fellowship equips emerging leaders with the knowledge, leadership skills, mentorship, and collaborative networks needed to address one of the world’s most pressing public health challenges. Global Fellowship Aims to Advance Brain Health Equity As populations continue to age worldwide, dementia has emerged as a growing public health concern requiring innovative, interdisciplinary solutions. The Atlantic Fellows for Equity in Brain Health program was established to develop a new generation of leaders capable of addressing inequalities in brain health through research, advocacy, policy, education, clinical practice, and community engagement. The fellowship welcomes experienced professionals from diverse sectors who are passionate about creating equitable brain health outcomes in their communities and beyond. Participants become part of a lifelong international community dedicated to improving brain health through collaboration, innovation, and leadership. Two Fellowship Pathways Available Applicants can choose between two distinct fellowship experiences, each sharing the same mission while offering different learning models. Trinity College Dublin Fellowship The Dublin-based program offers: A full-time, in-person fellowship A life-course approach to brain health Training focused on the social determinants influencing dementia risk Immersive learning within Trinity College Dublin University of California, San Francisco Fellowship The UCSF pathway provides: A global hybrid learning model Interactive online coursework International in-person workshops Opportunities to engage with the UCSF Memory and Aging Center Flexible participation while remaining connected to home institutions and communities Applicants may submit an application to only one fellowship site during each application cycle and are encouraged to select the program that best aligns with their professional aspirations and preferred learning environment. Interdisciplinary Learning at the Core of the Fellowship One of the defining strengths of the Atlantic Fellows for Equity in Brain Health program is its interdisciplinary approach. The fellowship brings together professionals from a broad range of fields, including: Clinical medicine Neuroscience Public health Public policy Technology Engineering Education Journalism Business Social sciences Arts and creative disciplines By learning alongside professionals from multiple sectors, fellows exchange ideas, challenge conventional thinking, and develop innovative approaches to improving brain health in diverse communities across the globe. The program builds upon each participant’s existing expertise while expanding their understanding of clinical care, scientific research, public health, leadership, and the humanities. Transforming Knowledge into Community Impact Throughout the fellowship year, participants strengthen their leadership capabilities while developing practical solutions to address dementia and promote healthier aging. Graduates of the program have gone on to: Lead groundbreaking research projects Improve clinical care services Shape public policy Launch community-based health initiatives Advocate for greater awareness of dementia Build international collaborations The fellowship also provides opportunities to apply for GBHI Pilot Awards for Global Brain Health Leaders, which support projects designed to improve brain health outcomes within fellows’ home communities. One example highlighted by GBHI is Atlantic Fellow Prabha Shrestha, whose pilot project in Nepal focuses on hypertension as a modifiable risk factor for dementia. The initiative demonstrates how fellowship training can be translated into locally driven solutions with global significance. Lifelong Membership in a Global Leadership Network Completion of the fellowship marks the beginning of long-term engagement rather than the conclusion of the program. Graduates become members of a lifelong international network of Atlantic Fellows for Equity in Brain Health, continuing to collaborate through mentorship, research partnerships, leadership opportunities, and ongoing professional development. Fellows also gain access to the wider Atlantic Fellows network, connecting them with changemakers across seven fellowship programs working toward healthier, fairer, and more inclusive societies around the world.
