Barbro Klein Fellowship Programme 2027–28
globalsouthopportunities.com

Application Deadline

April 7, 2026

Description

The Barbro Klein Fellowship Programme at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (SCAS) is a prestigious residential fellowship designed to support scholars who investigate cultural diversity from a global perspective. The programme invites applications from researchers across the humanities and social sciences, encouraging innovative and interdisciplinary work that addresses cultural heritage, societal structures, public resistance, and diverse cultural expressions in both local and global contexts. Eligibility Criteria Applicants must meet the following requirements: Hold a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree for at least three years by the time of application. For the 2027–28 fellowship, this means a PhD awarded no later than 1 June 2023. Have a record of independent scholarly achievement beyond the post-doctoral level, including significant publications. Be active participants in international academic forums. Not be required to hold a current institutional affiliation or university position. Demonstrate research that contributes to understanding cultural and social diversity, creativity, and the variety of cultural expressions globally. The programme particularly encourages applications from talented early-career scholars in non-Western countries and individuals from underrepresented genders, though it remains open to all qualified candidates. Fellowship Duration The Barbro Klein Fellowship offers flexible options for residence: Autumn semester: 1 September 2027 – 17 December 2027 Spring semester: 11 January 2028 – 16 June 2028 Full academic year: 1 September 2027 – 16 June 2028 Applicants may choose to apply for a single semester or for the full academic year. Application deadline: 1 June 2026 (23:59 CET). Candidates are advised to submit only one fellowship application, as multiple submissions do not increase the likelihood of selection. Remuneration and Accommodation Fellows typically receive a monthly stipend, although SCAS does not match salaries from home institutions. Applicants are encouraged to seek supplementary funding through sabbatical salaries, grants, or other sources. Accommodation is generally provided for fellows residing outside the Stockholm–Uppsala region. Whenever possible, SCAS also assists Stockholm-based fellows who face commuting challenges. Application Process Applications are reviewed by a selection committee composed of Long-term Fellows and the Principal of the Collegium, who make the final decisions. The process involves: Reviewing all application materials, including personal data, which may be shared with external referees outside the EU/EEA. Assigning applications administratively if candidates submit multiple fellowship applications without specifying a preferred programme. In such cases, the programme selection will not reflect the research topic. Application Requirements Applicants must submit their applications via the Varbi online system, ensuring that: All required documents are completed and uploaded before the deadline. Applications are submitted well ahead of the closing date to allow time for technical support or inquiries. Contact information, including email addresses, is up to date in the Varbi system to ensure timely notification of results. Decisions will be communicated through the Varbi system no later than 28 February 2027. For technical questions, applicants may consult the Varbi help page or contact Varbi support at support@varbi.com. For programme-specific inquiries, candidates may contact the Barbro Klein Fellowship secretariat at fellowselection@swedishcollegium.se. Programme Objectives The Barbro Klein Fellowship aims to: Promote scholarly research on cultural diversity from a global perspective. Encourage interdisciplinary approaches that integrate insights from humanities and social sciences. Support innovative projects examining cultural heritage, societal dynamics, creative expression, and public resistance. Facilitate intellectual exchange and collaboration among fellows from diverse backgrounds. By providing time, resources, and an inspiring academic environment, SCAS enables fellows to advance their research agendas and strengthen international scholarly networks. Important Notes Applicants must pass security vetting if required, as eligibility for employment is contingent upon clearance. All fellowship applications are considered carefully and competitively; adherence to guidelines and deadlines is critical. Key Takeaways The Barbro Klein Fellowship supports research on cultural diversity in global and local contexts. Open to scholars across humanities and social sciences with a strong publication record and international engagement. Provides flexible residence options, financial support, and, when needed, accommodation. Applications are due 1 June 2026; only one submission per candidate is permitted. Results will be announced by 28 February 2027 via the Varbi system.
