Application Deadline

June 11, 2026

Description

Legal Action Worldwide is recruiting a Communications Coordinator to join its Nairobi office in Nairobi. The role offers an opportunity for an experienced communications professional to contribute to human rights advocacy across East and the Horn of Africa, supporting storytelling, media engagement, and digital communications for justice-focused programmes. The position sits within a regional hub that oversees programmes in Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, and South Sudan, making it a key communication bridge between field operations and global advocacy efforts. About Legal Action Worldwide Legal Action Worldwide (LAW) is an independent non-profit association of human rights lawyers and legal experts dedicated to supporting survivors of human rights violations and international crimes. The organisation works in conflict-affected settings to promote access to justice through survivor-centred, gender-responsive, and trauma-informed approaches. Operating across 18 countries, LAW combines strategic litigation, advocacy, and capacity-building to strengthen justice systems and promote accountability. Its long-term vision is a world where all survivors can access justice and where impunity does not undermine sustainable peace. The organisation works closely with communities, justice institutions, and policymakers to advance the rule of law and ensure meaningful engagement in legal and advocacy processes. Role Overview: Communications Coordinator The Communications Coordinator will be responsible for strengthening LAW’s regional visibility and ensuring consistent, high-quality communication across multiple platforms. Working closely with Programme Managers in the field and the Communications Manager based in Geneva, the role focuses on storytelling, media relations, and digital engagement. The position requires a strong ability to translate complex human rights and legal work into accessible and compelling narratives for global audiences. Key responsibilities include: Developing and managing regional communication strategies across multiple countries. Creating high-quality content for social media, websites, newsletters, and campaigns. Supporting media engagement and building relationships with journalists and regional networks. Documenting field activities through photography, video, and storytelling. Coordinating communications materials for events, advocacy campaigns, and publications. Strategic Communications and Content Development A central part of the role involves developing structured communication plans for LAW’s programmes across Somalia, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Sudan. The Communications Coordinator will design content calendars and ensure consistent storytelling across digital and traditional media channels. Responsibilities in this area include: Planning and scheduling social media, press, and web content. Tracking communication performance and analysing media impact. Supporting the development of key messages, reports, and advocacy materials. Attending events and field missions to capture content and produce visual storytelling materials. The role also involves maintaining strong relationships with journalists, media outlets, and communication partners across the region. Digital Communications and Social Media Engagement The Communications Coordinator will play a key role in shaping LAW’s digital presence. This includes managing social media platforms and ensuring content aligns with the organisation’s visual identity and advocacy goals. Key duties include: Producing engaging social media content, including case studies and impact stories. Coordinating with designers, videographers, and photographers to produce multimedia content. Updating regional website content and improving digital engagement strategies. Analysing performance metrics to improve communication effectiveness. The role requires strong creative and technical skills, particularly in video editing, photography, and digital storytelling. Events, Advocacy, and Campaign Support In addition to digital communications, the role supports LAW’s advocacy work through event planning and coordination. The Communications Coordinator will assist in organising public events, briefings, and roundtables in Nairobi and across the region. Responsibilities include: Preparing communication materials such as invitations, agendas, and promotional content. Supporting logistics for advocacy events and field missions. Collaborating with programme teams to ensure consistent messaging. Contributing to regional campaigns that highlight justice and accountability issues. The role may involve regional travel, including to Somalia, Sudan, and South Sudan. Skills and Experience Required Legal Action Worldwide is seeking a communications professional with strong journalism, media, or advocacy experience. Preferred qualifications include: A bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Media Relations, or a related field. At least four years of experience in communications, journalism, or media relations. Proven experience creating digital and social media content. Strong storytelling and content production skills. Experience working with international NGOs, preferably in human rights or humanitarian contexts. Additional desirable skills include video editing, photography (including DSLR use), and familiarity with Microsoft Office tools. Strong written and spoken English is required, while knowledge of Arabic or other regional languages is considered an advantage. A Role at the Intersection of Media and Human Rights The Communications Coordinator role is ideal for professionals who want to use storytelling and media skills to support human rights and justice initiatives. By documenting fieldwork, amplifying survivor voices, and supporting advocacy campaigns, the role directly contributes to raising awareness of international crimes and access-to-justice efforts. The position also requires adaptability, independence, and the ability to work collaboratively across multicultural teams and complex operational environments. Salary and Contract Details The position is based in Nairobi and offers a full-time 12-month contract with the possibility of extension depending on funding. The annual salary ranges between KES 3,660,000 and KES 3,780,000, depending on experience, plus benefits. A Meaningful Career in Justice-Focused Communications This Communications Coordinator role at Legal Action Worldwide provides an opportunity to contribute to global human rights advocacy through powerful storytelling and strategic communications. By combining journalism, digital media, and advocacy, the successful candidate will help amplify the voices of survivors and support efforts to strengthen accountability systems across conflict-affected regions.
